ASIN: ASIN R2d2 - Interactive Robot, is quite good for younger children. Our 7-yr old enjoys playing with this little character. In the month since he received this toy, the child has learned a lot about voice-activation. We can see that he will soon tire of it, because he cannot add to the limited commands. For e.g., he said that there was only one audio-message. So he tried to enter more by saying: "Record new message." Of course, he could not.
It would be superb if there were other command modules available. On: 2008-01-07
We bought this for our 6 year old "Star Wars" fan grandson for Christmas. If anything can bring a smile to his face, itll be something Star Wars related. When Christmas morning arrived and he opened R2 up, I thought he was going to hyperventilate! He was SO impressed with how realistic he looked and once he turned him on and started talking to R2 and giving him commands, well, lets just say that it was the hit of Christmas morning and has been ever since! We think its funny how true to the movie he is in that sometimes he gets stubborn and refuses to do as you command, and thats not because he just isnt working right. He shakes his head "no" if he isnt in the mood to do as you say, which makes for alot of laughter. The sound level is perfect (not too loud or too quiet), he does a multitude of different things which keeps a childs attention and hes very durable considering the shape of him. The only thing you need to be careful of is that when R2 is up and about, make sure there are no strings or other items that might get stuck in his wheels. Other than that, hes absolutely amazing and incredibly entertaining! On: 2007-11-11
We got this toy Christmas 2006. He is still operating on the same set of batteries! No, he isnt played with all the time but enough to know the batteries are not sucked up. The toy can be frustrating the first day. The directions warn you he is tempermental. You need a quiet room and one person talking. You can not ask him or give him a command when he is in a looking type mode or is talking to you. You also dont need to hit him on the head to behave like my daughter does repeatedly. Just have him "Reset System" and that brings him out of his funk well enough. He works best on no carpet of course. I suspect carpet could drain the batteries faster. Search google for Easter Eggs. We just found a new one which has rekindled our play. What a cool looking toy and he moves just like the real one. On: 2007-10-16
Ive had this toy for a while now and although its an amusing gadget its often grumpy and disobeys my commands. Also, a lot of the time (when I turn it on) the light starts to blink rapidly, he beeps a little and then goes into standby mode (=shuts down). Hard to say if its a malfunction or just the fact that he doesnt like me (since I tap him on the head frequently). On: 2007-09-12
My wife actually bought it for me, but my kids soon co-opted it from me. Its an enjoyable toy that has held up to the kids, though they really havent been particularly rough with it. The voice commands dont work as reliably as I would like, but the toy is fun. My kids enjoy chattering at R2, though they havent quite grasped the need to give a sequential series of commands. They especially like to watch R2 going into Dance Mode. Overall, I highly recommend it. On: 2007-09-11

We bought my son an R2D2 this past Christmas (06), and it worked beautifully for 6 months. Then suddenly it does nothing you ask of it, and answers every command with a funny noise. Weve tried reset, replacing the batteries, and finally contacted Hasbro. They responded by saying there is nothing they can do, and that they cant replace him, but would replace him with any other of their products of the same price range. So what does that mean? They shouldnt be marketing the product, since it obviously is defective. I didnt expect a $100 product to last half a year. Cheap and cheesy...dont waste your $$. On: 2007-07-24
... and he will answer back!!! - Always loved R2 since I was 10 in 77 and I cant believe this toy actually exists. Went to my local jawa dealer the day he was available and took him home with me. A must have - super fun, really excellent quality - build and functionality - HEY R2 - MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU!!! On: 2007-07-23

My 6yo is totally into everything Star Wars. We got this for him as a present. He was thrilled to open it! Once we figured out the commands (you have to say certain words, in order) he played with it for a little while. You have to hit its head to "reset" it. As a parent, we are constantly trying to teach our kids NOT to hit, right? LOL! The laser tag game isnt as fun as we were expecting because you have to stay pretty close to R2. Dance Mode seems to be the most popular choice in this house.
All in all, its an entertaining toy. But, its a novelty and poor R2 will probably end up in a corner collecting dust for us. On: 2007-06-02
This is a super fun droid- and he sometimes follows those commands... we went online to find "easter eggs" which are special extra little commands not mentioned in the book (google/search "R2D2 easter eggs"). My 5 y/o likes it- though he gets frustrated when R2 shakes his head "no" and declines to follow instruction. He does spend some time in "time out" until he agrees to behave himself... ;) Hubby and I like it too, and kids aged 6-8 that he plays with like it pretty well also. On: 2007-02-03
My son bought r2d2 for me for chrismas. My 1 1/2 year old granddaughter thinks it is her brother. I love it. I have always loved R2D2 ever since I saw the first movie when my son was only a few months old. R2D2 does all kind of really neat things, but I even just like to look at him. It is too bad this was a limited issue item. On: 2007-01-11
We had a smooth order and the product arrived with no problems. Our kids aged 8 and 10 really enjoyed playing Star Wars adventures with their new friend.
As a parent you do need to take the time to read the directions and explain the way to voice the commands to ensure R2 can perform the functions. With a little practice children can really enjoy their new little friend. On: 2007-01-11
This is a really neat toy and has been a source of interest for many. My 9 year old son just loves it and is very protective of it. I would reccommend this toy to any interested in Star Wars paraphenalia. Thanks On: 2007-01-11
R2 was a lot of fun to play with on Christmas morning! It took us a while to get hime going, and keep him going, with so many people around. Seems like R2 needs peace and quiet to hear his commands. Highly recommend R2! On: 2007-01-10
Santa brought R2 to our house this year, and he was a hit! Hes a lot of fun, and can entertain for hours. The only problem is that you have to get about 12 inches from his head and talk VERY loudly and VERY distinctly for him to hear you. Another thing: turn off the tv, tell everybody to shut their mouths, and make sure no cars are going down your street, too, because R2 is EASILY distracted by other noises. The most frequent command we issue is: RESET SYSTEM.
Other than the noise issue, this is too much fun for the price... On: 2007-01-10
The R2D2 i have bought is very nice. Since i am fan for more than 20 years of starwars i have waited a long time for it! My only handicap is that my rather german pronunciation sometime generates some misunderstanding! On: 2007-01-09
My son wanted this for Christmas. I was reluctant in buying it not knowing if it would be worth it. It was! This toy is so cute and my son LOVES it! On: 2007-01-09
I went on line prior to purchasing this item for my 6 year old son for Christmas. The reviews sounded like it wouldnt be a dust collector, so I decided to go for it as my son has discovered the Star Wars series with enthusiasm. I also downloaded the Easter egg commands from a prior review. The device functions flawlessly with me in command, but my 5 year old is not as clear and loud to get R2 to respond. This has made it frustrating for him. It does not keep him very entertained now 2 weeks after Christmas, and is going to be a dust collector I believe. It is a cute little device, but the fun factor for my son makes it about a 2 star. Maybe Santa will hit the target better next year. On: 2007-01-08
I was very impressed with this excellent collectible toy. Great price for a smart robot who can interact with you and the kids. My only grumble is that he sometimes get too much of an attitude and will not respond to your commands, then you must hit him on the head to reset and he doesnt like that. Otherwise he is alot of fun and still looks good when just sitting on a shelf. I recommend this product. On: 2007-01-06
What a terrific product this robot is, very interactive and just loads of fun and laughs. I would not hesistate to buy another! On: 2006-10-04
I bought R2-D2 for my daughters birthday. It was pricey, so I was hesitant, but she seemed to really want it. Boy, Im glad that I did as it is a very well made, sophisticated toy. I find myself playing with it and treating it almost as a pet. You talk to it, and it responds to you, it plays games and can be mischievous. We like "light tag", and "spin the droid". If you tell him to go on a "Time out", he shakes his head "no" like a disobedient child. If you tell him to "Behave himself" and give him a "Time out" again, he obeys. Sometimes, we have a hard time getting him out of "Game Mode" to "Companion Mode" (He doesnt seem to understand the "Re-set command" always), so you just turn him off and then turn him back on. Thanks to the reviewer giving the "Easter Eggs". They were fun to do. Overall, the voice recognition is good, but it definitely takes practice to learn the nuances of his programming. A fun toy and a "must" for any Star Wars fan. by: Anonymous On: 2006-04-01
This toy seems like a Real Robot!! Buy him when you get the chance tho because hes rare they only made like 9,000 of them. This Toy is really really really COOL. BUY HIM. You wont regret it. bye. by: Anonymous On: 2006-01-23

Santa brought R2 to my 6 year old son this Christmas. My son takes this robot with him everywhere. I was concerned that he would lose interest after a few days, but he spends the majority of his day playing with R2. The entire family has enjoyed giving him various commands and in addition to the commands listed in the Command Guide, R2 has some advanced commands (sometimes known as Easter Eggs) built in that we found on the HASBRO website. Here they are:
Advanced Command #1 - Follow Me
In Companion Mode, if you say "Follow Me," R2 will turn to find you and then attempt to follow you around. Go slowly though, or R2 will lose you and turn the other direction.
Advanced Command #2 - Come Here
Also in Companion Mode, if you say "Come Here," R2 will attempt to find you and come to you. Since this feature relies on R2s heat sensing technology, kneel down in front of R2. R2 may not come directly to you, but R2 will try and find you.
Advanced Command #3 - Imperial March Song
R2 plays up to 5 songs, but only the Cantina song is expressly mentioned in the Command Guide.
To play the Imperial March, go to Character Mode by asking "Do You Remember." Ask R2 about Darth Vader and Anakin (in any order) and R2 will play the song.
Advanced Command #4 - Sad Cantina Song
Another song that R2 plays is actually a different version of the song he sings if you command him to do the dance program (in game mode). When R2 is in a sad mood, he will play a sad version of the Cantina song. There are many ways to put R2 into a sad mood. The easiest is in Do You Remember. If you ask about Darth Vader, R2 will go into a sad mood. You can tell, because his mood status indicator will be red instead of blue.
Advanced Command #5 - Celebration Song
The Celebration Song is another one of the 5 songs that R2 plays and is not expressly mentioned in the Command Guide.
To play the Celebration song, go to Character Mode by asking "Do You Remember." Ask R2 about Chewbacca, Han Solo, and Luke Skywalker (in any order), and R2 will play the celebration song.
Advanced Command #6 - A "Special Surprise"
The final hidden gem for R2 really takes a little work, as well as really knowing your droid.
First, have R2 turn on his light beam by saying "light beam." With his light beam on, tap R2 three times on the head, and then place him into Game Mode by telling R2 "Game Mode" and then "Dance program." R2 will have a special dance, just for you.
Overall, I am happy with our R2. I hope you find the commands useful for your little droid. :) On: 2006-01-01

Temperamental, disobedient and he gets into a lot of trouble. Im not talking about a pet or your average little kid, Im talking about the Star Wars Interactive R2D2 Robot (2005 edition).
All of 18 inches tall, this diminutive little toy gets around well on most surfaces (hardwood or linoleum floors are best) and is a lot of fun. But hes not your daddys Radio-Controlled R2D2. This Artoo unit doesnt automatically do what you say, or even what you want or expect. Although, on most occasions, you wont have a problem with Artoo, the one I bought has shown flashes of temper and streak of stubbornness that would try even the most patient parent.
Despite this (or maybe because of this) Artoo is a riot! I took him over to my friends place for Christmas and, at first, everyone in the room was amazed at how well he followed orders. Whether it was to turn left, turn right, go forward or turn around, Artoo seemed pleased as punch to follow directions. Then his temper flared and he, quite pointedly, refused to obey me; shaking his head and making noises in apparent disdain at my pleas.
That reaction brought the house down, as everyone laughed at his refusal to follow his "masters commands." When I ordered him to "re set system" and he refused again, that created still more chuckles. Finally he got over his little "snit" and behaved normally...until he seemed to change his mind decided to act up all over again.
Then my friend, who has three children of his own, got into the act. Pleading with Artoo in his best "daddy voice" he finally got the robot to obey him where my pleas failed. Then, like a stubborn child, Artoo had another tantrum and stopped listening to him too. That invoked a surprising response from me, anger. But, instead of spanking him like any other misbehaving child, I manually shut him off via the power switch on his behind so he could "calm down" (I would have spanked him, too, but Hasbro, the manufacturer, has not seen fit to include a pain function on him...yet!).
Needless to say, all this only helped to further endear Artoo to everyone around him, although this behavior can get annoying when you want him to do something simple, like bring you a beverage. That said, after a while it became hard to see him as simply another "toy," which is probably what Hasbro had in mind all along.
Instead of a mere "toy," they created a "personality," one that can interact, and react, with both people and the environment around him. Had Artoo simply followed directions, he would have got "old" real fast; becoming nothing more than another cleverly designed (but boring) set of circuits and switches run by batteries. But, by giving him what appears to be a random and unpredictable nature, Hasbro has made Artoo appear to be as realistic, and "alive," as the one in the movies we all love.
That said, Artoo is also a very clever robot, packed with sonar and voice recognition capabilities that are very functional. Although he cannot "see" things below his domed head, he is not stupid and not only found his way out of my bedroom but proceed to bound his way down the hallway.
Artoos dance function is hilarious and he patrols a floor better than the average mutt, without fear of "accidents." Although the beverage container is problematic (the grip is not very strong), he does manage to find his way around a house fairly well and will probably get into all kinds of mischief unless monitored carefully (like any toddler). Be careful, though, of stairs, as Artoo does not have a floor-sensor and would go over and down them, with catastrophic results.
Combined with a very affordable price tag, the Star Wars Interactive R2D2 Robot (2005 edition) is a terrific toy and well worth the money. If anyone reading this article knows of any "secret" or hidden commands, please e-mail me and let me know.

We got one at BJs (like Costco or Sams) for son for Christmas. We got him out to check if all ok and the light beam wont operate. All else is ok. I have a request in to Hasbro Cust Support via e-mail to see if can get repair info. Phone customer support was helpful but they couldnt tell me anything about fixing it. The stores are out of them now.
Cant find anything online about problem w/ the "light beam".
Well see... On: 2005-12-19

I go over to my friends house everyday, and play with this awesome buddy! My mom is getting me this, a ipod mini, and an Xbox 360! If i could choose one, i would choose R2, hes kinda like a kids kid! by: Anonymous On: 2005-12-12
This toy is cutenall but at first it is very hard to interact with. It sometimes wont listen at all no matter what we do I even read the whole manual and we still cant get it to work. But overall The toy is pretty fun. On: 2005-11-25
Ive had this toy for years and it is great to see it finally back on the shelves. Voice activated R2 obeys over 40 commands. R2 dances, plays hide-n-seek. You hide, it seeks and can somehow distinguish between you and a lamp. There are even unexpected responses that will suprize you. Question him three times about heroes or villians and hell play a marching theme song. I had him deliver candy to Trick or Treaters on halloween. So much smarter than the RC robots, I can only compare him to the Sony AIBO that costs 10 or 20 times as much. If I had a wish list...it would to be able to add more programming with memory sticks like AIBO and then it would have some educational value to go along with all that play value. On: 2005-11-25
I love this toy ... and I agree with the previous reviewers...we bought it for my nephew and Im even thinking of getting one of my very own as a collectors Item/keepsake. but I think some of the prices its being sold for here on Amazon IS A LITTLE HIGH ... we found it at a costco store for $64.99+ tax which in our opinion is far Better than Ive seen it being sold ON AMAZON ..... THE PRICE ON HERE WAS A LIL HIGH IN COMPARISON by: Anonymous On: 2005-11-16
