Ok, one star missing. This is a nice little DVD player to relax with. Go kick back on the couch, put the player on your lap and enjoy your favorite DVDs, in your own private theater. But you will need a tiny bit of help. The sound isnt very good, so I suggest buying this player with a set of noise cancelling headphones (Sony MDR-NC6 was a good choice for me, just make sure you have plenty of AAA batteries around!).
I really do like this little DVD unit, the acid test will be when I have to rely on battery power during the frequent electricity outages that are pretty common here. For now, I am very pleased with this product & I use it frequently. On: 2006-11-10
I bought this DVD as a gift for someone in Europe.
It worked fine for almost a month now (and its been used a lot). Plus it played European DVDs.
Very impressed.

received without a power supply or car adaptor, therefor the dvd player is completely unusable. no idea if it even works. On: 2006-09-07
I bought this because there was a considerable discount included, but I really feel like I got more than my moneys worth. Works great, right from the start. No problems or hitches at all. The picture is good, the sound is ok too, and I like that I can connect it to a TV to use as my regular DVD player. I havent had any issues with it and I love that I can take it with me. Oh, and the battery charges very quickly too! Its great! On: 2006-08-29
I bought this DVD player when I arrived in the USA from the UK for my 3 mth long summer work experience at the start of the summer. And Yes it still works.
I never heard of ASTAR but to be perfectly honest I was not bothered by the make more on the price.
I recently decided to try my region 2 and guess what IT worked yippeee.
Overall The sound is a little weak and even though it has a wide screen 16:9 movies still produce black bars at the top and bottom but apart from that ITS FANSTASTIC for the price its kept me happy on my days off. Pefect for taking to college. On: 2006-08-28
So far Im really happy with the performance of this product. Ive never heard of the Astar before but while doing my online search for an affordable Portable DVD Player I came across them...the price was fitting for my budget and not only that---the product description was pretty good. So eventhough I felt a little unsure of what I was doing due to the unfamiliarity of the companys name...I still went ahead with my purchase. And guess what?
Im very pleased with my decision up to this point....
AWESOME. On: 2006-08-27
I bought this as a gift for a friend and we watched a movie on it that day. The sound was a little weak, but if you are in a quite room it works fine. All in all I liked it and consider it well worth the money. Im thinking of buying myself one now. On: 2006-08-18
I bought this a few weeks ago to see what you get for a DVD player at this very low price. I have been thrilled with it. I can play all my DVDs from North America (NTSC) and Europe (PAL) and even my MP3 files on CD. It works very well for what it is, with enough battery power to run a couple of movies, and its small enough to slip in my briefcase. The screen at 6.5" is just big enough to immerse you in the movie without distraction and the picture is good enough too. I dont know how it compares with better (more expensive) models because I havent tried any, but for what it cost its a bargain. I dont see any good reason to upgrade to a better player for a long while. On: 2006-08-18
I bought this DVD player at a local grocery store with the idea that it was probably a $50 machine with all the little gadgets like the case and A/V cables plus a remote control, at $89 it was a nice complete set up. If it died in a year? well...Ive blown that much money on stupider things. He was excited and his dad was shocked. I told him it was a lot less expensive than any video game out there and I wouldnt have to hear the annoying bleeps. Since then, it has made numerous trips to Grandmas, has flown to Missouri and back...saved us when we had a delay soooo long that an 80-year-old woman got arrested for assaulting a purser!
Anyone who has an issue with scratches on their DVDs needs to remember to clean them and to clean the machine. Our problems with it have been minor; one has been that the picture doesnt show if the screen is opened too far. Okay, so we dont do that. Also, the volume doesnt go as loud as our son would like...darn. Another problem is that it will shut itself down if it gets overheated. I dont see that as a problem, just something that wasnt mentioned in the owners guide. (What a shame that the grandma at the airport didnt have that feature!!) But at this price, I have gotten way more than my moneys worth and my son has enjoyed it immensely. On: 2006-08-09
for this price, this product is really good....the image is pretty clean and battery consumption is fairly good.... On: 2006-08-03
When it arrived, I was a little disappointed. It is definitely not built to last very long. I was afraid that the door would wear out or break within a month or so. Well, that was not an issue because the unit never worked with the provided battery. It was Ok with the wall plug, but its supposed to be portable. The sound was OK as long as it wasnt turned up too loud - picture was OK too. I would expect to find an item of this quality advertised as my first DVD player, reccomended for a child between 9 - 12, at a lower price - perhaps $49.99 or so. On: 2006-06-09
I purchased this unit for myself and it has perfomed without any issues. I was worried that the 6.5" screen may make a difference but I couldnt even tell when I compared other 7" models. I also purchased 1 as a gift for a family member and she loves it for traveling. Battery life is pretty good. For the money I cant complain. On: 2006-06-07
This is a player with a decent screen, good features, good price, and nice controlls. Pretty much everything you expect from a reasonably priced DVD player. However, when I played DVDs with it, it scratched a ring, preventing viewing of the movie. It did this to two of our movies and a rental movie. Look for a player that doesnt ruin your movies.
