Excellent piece of musical electronic. Very good storage space for thousands of music. Good screen resolution for videos. It is impossible to control the volume from the ipod when used with ipod compatible FM transmitter or home theatre docking system. Volume control works only when using earpiece.

Great product but there are a few glitches if you are not carefull.
I have not bought any songs, I downloaded all my own CDs using my Windows XP computer.
I soon realized I needed to move my itunes library to an external drive to free up the space on my c:drive.
Now if I try to use my song library I get error message "files not found do you want to search" If I search I can find the song in Windows but have to find each song individually, I can then add it to the library at the new drive location.
I have 2600 songs I burned from my CD collection and I have now started this time consuming task to be able to use my itunes library.
Meanwhile I cannot attach my iPod to the computer as I am told this will clear the iPod drive.
So if you buy this great item be careful if you need to move your songs to another drive or computer. There is a way to do it, but it is not the most obvious way.

The product arrived fast and in excellent condition. There was not a CD but rather an Apple website to download newest itunes version. It would not load on Windows 2000 but required XP and Apple referred us to tech support where we purchased item. Eventually I used another computer with XP.

This IPod is great! Very customer friendly. Easy to sync, easy to load, easy to use.
The sound quality is AMAZING, however, I do not personally care for the earbuds that come with it. They are too big and do not stay secure in my ears, so I will be purchasing some other kind in the near future.
I purchased a refurbished model of this IPod and found the description to be very honest and detailed.
The only thing that wasnt mentioned was that there were quite a few tiny scratches(from previous usage) on the back of the casing. Otherwise it was in perfect conditon and packaged nicely.

I finally fell for the siren call of owning an Apple iPod. I already own a Toshiba Gigabeat for music, but it is getting outdated and I wanted something different to download all of my audiobooks so when I travel I wouldnt be carrying pounds of printed material or loads of disks. I probably went overboard on storage space with my 80gb iPod Classic, but I have found I can download from the iTunes store, the different vendors like Audible and Alibris as well as copy from the audio cds I own. Its like walking around with a library that fits in the palm of my hand. The downsides to the iPod are the earbuds that came with it (I just substituted the Phillips earbuds I use with the Gigabeat) and I would like more control on how things are downloaded. My audiobook cds all want to be saved into Music and not the audiobooks section of the iPod. I use playlists extensively in order not to have to scroll down all the titles when I am looking for the book I want. And yes, now that I have used the iPod for a while, I am also adding music to it. With a USB adaptor for charging the iPod this player goes anywhere and gives great sound.

While the newest 6G iPod Classic offers some new features and a slim profile, this older 5.5G iPod is the best one currently available (12/24/07).
With a Wolfson DAC, a component not featured in new "classic" iPods, this 80GB iPod features the sound quality that made iPod a viable music listening platform. It also has a bright screen, good battery life, and the ability to play videos, photos, songs, games and more! It plays entire albums flawlessly with no gaps between tracks, a problem that plagued older iPods for years.
Finding a good deal on this unit is the best possible 80GB iPod purchase you can make until Apple hopefully fixes the 6G iPod sound problems. Lets keep our fingers crossed for the upcoming 7th generation.

I purchased mine over a year ago and have been quite happy with it. It has never stopped working or anything just stores my music and videos perfectly. Maybe people should invest in a good cover for theirs though. I have a nice hard see through plastic one that has protected my ipod since i got it.

Unfortunately the battery would not hold a charge. But the retun service was excellent. No hassles and the refund was made immediately upon receipt of the returned Ipod. I would use this company again.

I have the 80gb Generation 5.5 iPod with video. I have had it for about a month now, & every time I have ever tried to play a video it would play for about a second, then get corrupted & freeze. When I go "back", trying to get to the menu, the entire iPod then FREEZES & no matter what you do it is completely unresolvably FROZEN until it runs out of juice and you plug it in to recharge it. This is pretty awful, since this is undoubtedly shortening the life of the battery considerably. Worse than that, the only fix anyone online has had for me so far was "Wait until the battery dies and then recharge it & itll be fine", which I was - you can imagine - less than pleased with hearing, since Id figured that much out frustratingly on my own. There has to be a better answer than that, or Im going to feel pretty ripped off.

Had an ipod that stopped worked exactly after the warranty period. Apple then explains to you that you cannot pay to have it repaired, it is not in their policy!
You can try to find somebody to open it.
Other friends had the same problem, end of the warranty, and the ipod stops working/be warned.

I got this 5.5 generation iPod after reading the that 6th generation is a lemon. This has probably to do with Apple changing the internal components to lower the price.
Everything got up and running easily. Since I already have iTunes and a 3rd generation hard-drive iPod, I just used the charger that came with that one to charge my new one. Syncing with iTunes 7.5 was easy, and mysteriously it named my iPod after my husband because the Windows PC has his name as default. The only glitch is that I could not eject my iPod 5.5 Gen (like I can my 3rd Gen) from iTunes. Windows complains that some file on the iPod is being accessed. What I had to do was to go to the Explorer, select the drive letter that was assigned to the iPod and "eject" there. Then go to the Stop devices and stop that device. In any case, the iPod "Do not Disconnect" was gone, and I unplugged it, even though Windows complains that it could not stop the device.
The clickwheel is slightly different than the touchwheel on my 3rd generation which feels more responsive. But it works okay.
Regarding the comment on Classical music, if the albums you import have ID tags online, then all of it imports correctly, including artist, song title, etc. I have lots of classical albums and it works fine. Also, if you want the iPod to remember where it was, you need to go to "Get Info"->"Options" tab, and check the box "Remember Playback Position". This way if youre in the middle of a long symphony and you turn off your iPod, you can get back to it.
What I cant believe is that the iPod software is so lame when it comes to Podcasts. Each Podcast episode is "1 of 1", and listed in reverse chronological order. This means that if you want to listen to it in chronological order, you must scroll all the way to the end. Then you select the episode, and as soon as it is finished, it pops back to the main menu, and you have to click and scroll all over again to get to the second episode. If you select the Title of the Podcast category, and click "play", youll get the last episode, after which it jumps back to the main menu. Youd think that Apple, the inventor of podcasts would by default create a chronologically ordered playlist by default of any podcast and allow you to play it as a collection starting at "1 of 100", with the back and next buttons allowing you to go back and forth. In anycase after more research I found out that you have to go to iTunes on the PC and create a playlist. You can then drag/drop the episodes in the order you want to hear it. Or you can create a "Smart Playlist", and itll create one in alphabetical order, which usually works out to be in chronological order (but not always, depends on naming convention of the Podcaster). I could not figure out how to make a "Smart Playlist" go in chronological order, so if someone knows how, please comment.

If youre into rock, hip hop, jazz ect, generally any music except for classical you will love your ipod. I put all my non classical cds in it, and I had in it with no problem Dave Matthews, U2 so on and so forth. It goes and gets the cd artwork and info from the cd; its great for this.
BUT the biggest part of my musical addiction is classical. I have a 40gb IRiver H340 that the battery is going on and is no longer working correctly. All the files are WMA not MP3, so they either have to be converted to work in the ipod or reinstalled. I have about 500 cds of classical music from A-Zelenka, and the thought of having to reinstall all the information in the correct order has me about to pull my hair out. FYI It doesnt convert a file it converts one piece of music at a time. This means you have to manually click on each piece to convert. And it displays them in itunes in what I would call a "random order". Im not a classical snob but I want the information displayed on the screen of the ipod to at least be correct. It either picks the wrong information for the cd, or it doesnt group the whole cd as one cd. And I dont want to see U2 or Enya listed as a composer. I like U2 but Musica Antiqua Cologne under Reinhard Goebel is a little different then U2. Yea yea I know its differentiated by genres, WRONG. J.P. Rameaus Les Fetes dHebe was listed as alternative & punk not classical. Just another thing Ill have to fix. Apple won the MP3 war, but my war with my ipod is just starting.

Instead of paying my car bill, I chose to buy the ipod 5th gen 80gb. that was not the right thing to do. purchase it from wal-mart, drove to my house and could not wait to start. problems problems problems.
1. plug it to my computer, the light came on once and never to be seen again. rush to walt-mart, they gave me another one.
2. Plug it in to my brandnew macbook. the light came on "yippie" this time itune wont read, have to download itune. no problem. do not disconnect sign never came off. at this point im just sad. called Apple, support staff are CLUELESS. took it back to wal-mart, manager at wal-mart looks at me funny. they gave me another one.
3. working. YES. download a stack of song, am very happy. two days later. lights will not come on. lost my receipt. wal-mart manager will not exchange, called apple, i was sent to apple store 1hr away from my house. staff ignored me. finally they zap it with something and it work while i was in the car.
4. at home will not work. called apple, after reset and reboot. NOTHING. finally apple agree for me to send it to them for another one. at this point im thinking the gods are laughing at me for spending so much money on such stupid thing, hell i couldve send it to a country that needed it for food or something.
5. true to their word, they sent me a box free shipping. two days later got my new apple. so far this is my 4th one and none are working. very quickly apple sent me my new ipod. it works until two days later I get a very low battery sign. let it sign for 10hrs, same thing. At this poing I want to cry. went on apple website, there are many people complaining about the same thing. WTF. no response from apple.
6. called apple, pleaded with them to give me at least 1/2 of my money back. i dont want this anymore. apple agreed to sent another free shipping box to get my apple fix. at this point i dont care.
The apple people must know they are feeding us items that are not fit to be sold because it was too easy for them to say that they will replace it for me. how many times can you replace one item. honestly one day another reliable company will come up with something better than apple that will wipe them out of the competition. im a hugh apple fan. now when i go to the computer store and see something by apple i move away from it. i keep begging for my money back but can get it back. if the next one they send me doesnt work i will go straight to the lake by house and throw it there.
will keep you posted if i still have the energy. by the way own three computer at home plus a mac book. my computers work fine.

I tried so hard to resist converting into an Ipod user, but alas, my Creative Zen broke down and I refused to pay $200 to repair. I purchased the 80GB, black Ipod (generation 5) around Novemeber 2006 and I have had no regrets about. So far I got almost 4000 songs and I still have tons of room left

I would recommend purchasing a sturdy protective case to protect your expensive investment, along with an external AC adapter

It was for my son and hes very happy with it and thats all that matters and thats all that counts at this point, however I will not order from this company again.

The ipod is great, I love mine, I have over a thousand songs, a hundred pictures, and a half hour Beavis & Butt-head movie, and its barely made a dent in the storage space. BUT.. sometimes in my car adapter it goes nuts. It jumps from one screen to another randomly. Also, I dont like that when you are in a playlist, you cant shuffle WITHIN that playlist. You can only shuffle all the songs. I dont want to shuffle all 1000 songs, just the ones in my heavy metal playlist! Unless I am missing some trick, but I dont think I am. But overall, its great to have an ipod. Purists sneer at them because the sound may not be as perfect as it could be, but you know what, its good enough for 99% of the headphones and car stereo speakers it will be played on. If you are a hardcore sound perfectionist, this isnt for you. If you are tired of juggling CDs in your car, this is much more compact, however you can still be distracted fiddling with the wheel control in the car, and unless you are driving a tank, thats dangerous. If you are considering getting your first ipod, get a good case for it, and buy it online so you can get the laser engraving done on the back. I wish I had done that.

I purchase my Ipod in December and loved it, but have not used it much. A week ago I tried to use the Ipod and discovered that the battery would not hold the charge, so I called apple to report the problem. They asked me to ship the Ipod to them, but I would have to pay a standard $30.00 for shipping. They sent me a shipping carton to package the Ipod for shipping, but the mailing label was not in my name (someone elses name), and all the instructions were in Spanish.
It took me at least three hours and numerous calls to apple to sort out the problem...I am now waiting for the new carton they promised, with English instructions.
I am mad that I am being charged shipping cost when the Ipod is practically new, still under warranty, and initially was so expensive. I am assuming that they will now send me a refurbished Ipod. What bothers me most is that after buying this expensive (now defective) PDA, I have to pay shipping costs for them to fix the problem.

Even though I purchased my Ipod a month before Apple came out with the newer version, I am extremely happy I have one...$100 loss or not! It is so much fun - great on the treadmill and on the plane (but I would suggest noise reducing earphones when watching a movie on a plane)!

As an octogenarian with a form of parkinsonism, I was pleased to find out how simple it is to use this iPod. I get the same satisfaction from my iPod as my grandchildren get from theirs, although our choice of songs is not quite the same. It is a fine portable music companion.

I love this thing, but I feel ripped off I paid $340 for this about 40 days ago when the 160gb version came oout for the same price. Someone below asked why Amazon has not changed the price. Unfortunately I feel dishonesty is behind it. They have a 30 day policy where they have to refund you the difference. If they wait long enough and keep the price the same, they will not have to pay anyone the difference. They know nobody will buy this at this price since the new ones are out. Why else would they sell these at elevated price (knowing nobody in their right mind would buy them)? My friend who bought one at Costco has 90 days to return with no questions asked. I wish I had done the same.

Happy with the product. I bought it for my sister, cos I already owned an iPod which she saw, liked, and demanded for one.
Ive never used any other brand of MP3 Players, so I can really judge; but Ive always believed the iPod is better, hence I stick to it. I recently purchased yet another iPod video for my Uncle. Im craving for the new iPod with cover flow function.

I saved my pennies for nearly a year to get this. My hands shook as I opened it. I was pleased with the whole process of transferring files. iTunes loaded as expected and the transfer went off without a hitch. I joined Audible and ported the books without incident. The device is fairly user friendly and fits comfortably in my pocket. Many people complain about scratching. I could care less about the scratches. Mine is scratched up, but it gives it character. My biggest complaint is power. The battery wont last a day. Constantly needs charging. Other than that, I love it.

More of the same in most respects: the good, the bad, and the ugly.
But the most obvious limitation is the lack of Bluetooth. Currently to use with Bluetooth it is necessary to buy an adapter (I use TEN Technology naviPlay Bluetooth Stereo Adapter for iPod - that doesnt fit that well alone and doesnt fit with any protective cover.
The functionality with a Bluetooth enabled cell phone once it is all set up is great. You listen to iPod when call comes in you here tone on headset and can switch to phone and when you hang up phone back to iPod.
It is also great in the gym or running or working out. No cord between iPod and headphones to get twisted up and pull out.
But as mentioned the technology to add Bluetooth to the iPod is really a kluge.
As more and more quality Bluetooth enabled headsets become available enabling the iPod with Bluetooth is really a no brainer.
The need is obvious; the technology trivial, Apple must know this is a must. The failure to do so may be to provide an advantage to the iPod cell phone, but failure to do so seems to have more to do with greed than anything else.
Hopefully the lack of Bluetooth is why Apple chose to designate this generation as 5.5. Maybe in 6, but then again MS Word does not have iPod in their spell check dictionary.

Ive always thought iPods were overrated, and I still do. But, I had to give the 80gb iPod five stars because of its functions, and the storage size. Ive had this for about two months and I just managed to fill a quarter of it, including podcasts and some music videos (though for some reason sound is lost in them). The shuffle modes are great but only compared to the Sansa e260, since thats the only other mp3 player Ive owned. You can shuffle albums, and it seems to shuffle songs in an album, but I forget what I did to do that. My sansa didnt really shuffle albums well, it would play a couple of songs, then off it went to the next album. This iPod never does that. If you dont care about shuffling albums, then this is neither a bonus nor a minus.
I bought this fully aware that it didnt have a FM radio built in, and though it would have been nice, I knew that I would have to give that up so I could start carrying around my entire CD library in this little thing. But, in place of radio (sort of) you get podcasts, of which some can really be interesting, and through iTunes, you can get a free song each week (though you may have to wait a couple of weeks to get a song you really like).
Overall, Im very happy with it. One downside to owning an iPod, though, is that accessories (especially the ones that you could really use) cost a lot (more than what theyre really worth). If you have the money, and you dont really care about FM radio, I would recommend this. And please, dont buy this then complain that it doesnt have a FM radio tuner built in, because Apple never said it did. Know what youre getting into before you buy something. Thats all.

Just so you dont go and drop $599 on an outdated 80g I-POD you should know that you used to be able to get 80g I-PODs from apple for $379 and now you can get a new generation I-POD 80 for $279 and a 160g for $379.
Not sure why they think they can get away with that rediculous price but buyers should be informed.

Wall Street Photo is a SUPER SHADY company. What company almost doubles the cost of an ipod 80. Amazon is tarnishing its image by using this comnpany. Just a few days ago Amazon itself was selling the 80 for $349. Of course amazon doesnt respond to complaints.

First off this is a great product. I can not believe I have gone without one for this long. I would highly recommend the 80 Gig as it is more versatile with holding video, pictures, and TV shows. Also you can load contacts etc.
I use this everyday on the train to work and it sure makes the long road trips easier to handle. I would recommend purchasing a few products with this as you will find them very useful.
First off purchase the iCare as it adds another year and phone support for your iPod.
Next purchase the FM transmitter for your car this comes in handy on road trips.
Also a plug adapter for charging your iPod with out the PC / Laptop.
Better earbuds help with the bass and treble in your music, wouldnt hurt to get a splitter for a friend on a plane also.

Apple has actually raised the price buy making you buy the AC adapter seperately. There are no longer any foam covers for the earbuds included either. The do give you a fabric case but I cant see anyone using it much as you cannot operate the iPod controls when it is in it.
While it is a nicely built machine, the 4th generation 60G appears to be more solidly built. Also, I have had to reset the software twice in two weeks. With the 4G it was twice in about 2 years and I used it more often.

Apple still makes the best mp3 players around, in my opinion. I bought this to replace a stolen, 4th generation, 30 GB iPod. This one is faster, more reliable, has better battery life, has more space, cost about the same, and looks cooler.
Pros:
- sleek
- easy to use
- reliable (old iPod would hang up very frequently while caching music; this one does not)
- battery life improved
- iTunes makes life easy (despite being the only DRM-enabled source for audio files on iPods)
Cons:
- battery life still needs improvement
- still fails to start up sometimes when battery is at roughly 30%; plugging it in for just a moment gets it going again
- scratches.*
* I havent had enough scratching to bother me, but I do think it scratches a little easily. Nearly all of the scratches I can find on mine are (a) on the metal backing or (b) on the center button of the click wheel. In other words, the inevitable scratches are all cosmetic on my iPod - none of them interfere with my actual enjoyment of the product by being, say, on the screen.
All in all, a great player, and one Im glad I bought.

I have 4 ipods now from the Nano, on up this being the latest purchase to the ipod family, already have 5 movies loaded and a ton of music plus a couple of games. Battery life is decent but would always like to see improvement. Sceen provides sharp image for movies and pictures, if you have the extra cash this is a good buy.

Rio Karma (Rio is out of business now) was (and still is) probably the best mp3 player around. My Karma is still working but aging.
Got this iPod as a replacement. Returned - no comparison to the Karma. The iPod is shinier but functionality-wise is not very good. Will wait until my Karma dies and then get something else.

The 80GB iPod continues Apples streak of home run iPod products, and it is a beautiful, precision instrument that anyone would be happy to own. Mine arrived yesterday (8.24.2007) and I immediately interfaced it to iTunes and synched up my music and photos. What a thrill to have essentially infinite space for songs, and plenty of room for photos to show friends.
The 80GB iPod fit nicely into my Kensington cradle for interfacing with our Bose stereo, and with the supplied adaptor it fit nicely into the Bose outdoor speakers cradle.
I selected the black unit, and I am glad I did--it looks sensational, although my previous white one did too. The click wheel on the 80GB unit has a subtly different feel to it from my older 20GB unit, a more "heavy duty" feel that I really like a lot.
The big color display on the 80GB iPod is gorgeous, and it is great fun to see album covers displayed as the unit plays all my favorite tunes. It will be great for the occasional movie although I have not yet loaded any onto the iPod. (Star Trek episodes are in the offing though!)
With 80GB storage, the iPod makes a very satisfactory place to stash photos during trips--even with all my songs loaded on, there is tons of capacity for temporarily downloading photos to it as an ordinary HDD.
Buyers will want some kind of protective case for this iPod since all iPods are doubtless prone to scratching otherwise. Fortunately, iPod covers have become a cottage industry and there are an infinite number to choose from. My old iPods leather cover, with the plastic protection for the display, fits the new iPod just fine and protects the display and body of the iPod.
This is a wonderful product that everyone is going to want!

Theres a very good reason why the iPod (in its 30 or 80 gigabyte versions) is the market leader... its a quite brilliant piece of technology. Beautifully designed, simple to use and incredibly powerful its the only sensible choice for anyone who wants to carry their music collection with them wherever they go. And, of course, you can also add huge numbers of photos, your address book & diary and even compressed videos.
But to get the best out of this wonderful piece of kit requires effort and expense. Effort, in that iTunes (which drives whats on your iPod) needs real work to ensure that your music collection can be accessed quickly and effectively. In particular, youll need to categorise your tracks on iTunes into their correct genres & release dates and, ideally, into some sort of star rating system - all of which can take an enormous amount of time. But, if youre prepared to spend the time, iTunes will then produce as many customised playlists as you want, either automatically or manually, based on a huge number of possible criteria. Want to hear all your favourite rock tracks released in the past 5 years, or the best tracks from one or more artists etc. etc.?... iTunes will produce playlists for them and will automatically update them as you add more tracks. Not just incredibly clever but the key to a total transformation in the way you access your music collection.
Expense, because once youve done this and then had the fun of creating dozens of playlists that deliver exactly what you want, your iPod will very rapidly become your main means of listening to music and, as a result, youll need additional kit. First off, youll need some form of protective cover to avoid damaging it while you carry it around; next youll need connections into your hi-fi & stereo units, ideally through one or more chargeable iPod docks, so that you can listen to it around the house; then youll need an FM transmitter so that you can listen to it in your car; then, a set of portable speakers so that you can listen to it in hotel rooms etc., and, finally, youll probably want to upgrade Apples bundled headphones to hear your collection in all its glory while walking, jogging or on the train or plane.
Sounds daunting? Well, the pay-offs for all this effort and expense are nothing short of sensational... youll be able to listen to exactly what you want, how you want, virtually anywhere you go... and all at the click of your iPods gloriously easy to use selection wheel.

There are many reviews I read here complaining about the Ipod freezing up after about a year. Well duh - it uses a hard disk which spins around with a little "needle" to read the tracks, so any vibrations/movement while the thing is working can potentially damage the hard disk. So guess what - you can have it in your car, on the bus, on the train or in a plain but eventually the hard disk will decide its had enough. If you carry your player around a lot I highly recommend a flash based player. I see people with these hard disk based players on the bus and really thats a no-no.

I purchased this iPod to replace my first generation iPod mini, and WOW! What a difference a few years (and an extra hundred dollars) makes. The 80 GB iPod is absolutely incredible. The color screen depicts sharp, vivid images and video. Unlike my old mini, there was no software to install with this model: I just connected it to my computer and started syncing my music. The amount of storage space on the new iPod is amazing: I think Ill be able to store every single song that was ever recorded! Finally, the battery life is much better than on my old mini, which needed to be recharged every two or three hours.
In a perfect world, the iPod would come with a built-in AM/FM radio tuner. It would have an even better battery, its glossy black body wouldnt become so easily dirtied with fingerprints, and its silver backing wouldnt scratch quite as easily. However, none of these minor shortcomings are enough for me to give this iPod any less than a five-star rating. I love, love, love my new iPod...and I cannot believe my iPod mini cost a whopping $250 when I purchased it just a few short years ago. The $350 price tag for the 80 GB iPod is very reasonable, considering how much bling you get for your buck. My only fear is that Apple will soon unveil an even cooler iPod, and Ill want to upgrade once again. Hopefully theyll hold off for a little while longer...

This is my first iPod and I love it. Its very easy to use and the screen is amazing. The Apple website is extremely useful for any technical questions you might have. I have over 200 albums on it and I have only used around 8gb of memory. I cant say enough great things about it - the only thing I would do for future versions would be add an FM tuner.

Works well, obivously more space at a lower price doesnt hurt. The only downside are the recording accessories. They leave no way to charge the ipod while youre recording so be careful which one you buy. The one with the boom mic sucks up the battery like crazy.

At first I didnt get into the ipod craze but with the pod it is soooo much easier to manage your tunes. I liked wmp, but itunes is much more user friendly. though sometimes the screen can be a little sluggish at times, the pod is definitely the player of choice for the serious music aficionado.

My 17 year old son is a music connoisseur, and when his old 80GB Ipod was stolen at work, he did not hesitate to spend the funds to replace it in kind. He lives with his Ipod, and he really does need the extra large capacity of the 80 GB model to fit all of his music on it.Amazon, as usual, had the best price, allowing for no sales tax and free shipping. I persuaded him to wait 5 days or so, and save almost $50 from the store price, even at that famous warehouse store. The white model is just slightly cheaper, and it is what he prefers. The Ipod may have its quirks, but if you use it all day every day, it is well worth the extra cost, and the lack of an easily replaceable battery.

Well I bought this for myself after waiting pretty much since day one of the ipod coming out. Im a music lover (a vast understatement) and felt this would be much more than a nice toy for someone like myself. I was right. As soon as I got it out of the box, I was enthralled. There are some things about the ipod that I felt should have been included and thusfar are not...such as being able to link two ipods/mp3 players together to share music, having iTunes (an excellent service) as an option, not a requirement as it currently is. Some other things as well. Regardless of these small issues, I was extremely happy with my first ipod, this 5.5 80gb version. I say "was" for a reason though. I had it a full three weeks before a blind date stole it (yeah I know, its like a special power of mine I think). My point in this is what should be obvious to anyone but perhaps, like myself, it doesnt occur to you when you receive your new player. Get the thing marked with your own initials and write down the unique ID number on it as soon as its out of the box. Treat this thing like a wallet. If you leave it laying on a table or some other place and turn your head for even a second, it will attract attention. Most jewelers will make a simple engraving for a small fee. Its worth it. At 80 gig (thats 100 megabytes = 1 gigabyte = a hell of a lot of room), you likely wont need another ipod for quite some time. Make sure it stays yours.

This iPod is so beautiful, functional and easy to use. I love having my photo album of over 300 pictures show up s as slide show, besides being able to ply my 3,500 songs. I did have it lock on me once but that was easily cured. I am not sure about the battery which was the weak link in my previous 3rd generation iPod. So far so good.

The extra room on this is terrific. I have downloaded several movies, hundreds of songs, music videos and pictures. With additioanl cables, I can watch downloaded movies on my regular television and bought a new stereo that lets me plug my iPod into it and play music over the stereo. I also bought a device so I can play the iPod over my car stereo. Being able to play songs and movies on other devices makes purchases from iTunes even more worth the money. This is truly a great product. Oh, but I have not been able to sync my Outlook contacts and datebook and had a lot or problems trying.

This was a good purchase - now I carry over 1100 favorite songs in the car without lugging along an armload of CDs, and, with "shuffle" can play a mix of favorites all the time. The first extra I added was a Belkin F8Z115 CASE to protect the finish of the ipod - next, a Kensington FM ipod transmitter/charger to play the music through the car speakers.
I also "sync" all my digital pictures off my laptop computer into this 80gig ipod, so it acts as a backup disc for pictures.

Amazon shipped right on time, price was right, it looks gorgeous, and is great to use while traveling. VERY happy with the purchase part of the product via Amazon. One might think watching shows on this would be difficult with a smaller screen, but the clarity is so great it rocks! The issue that made it 3 stars was that this thing would not sync with my PC for ANYTHING. Apple;s lovely customer service is available until 6 PM, so if you work, just forget about getting help with your $350 new product. The store wont touch it if you work with a PC, so thats fun. About 60 people on iTunes chat had the same errors as me, with zero resolution from Apple. LUCKILY, I had a crafty friend who figured out the issue, and it now works fine! But, still, I spend $350 and cant use it for 3 weeks with no help from Apple? Not good.

Seriously, I love this thing. There are so many things you can do, including putting DVDs into it (you have to use special programs for that, though). Once you figure out how to work it and put in your media, it becomes your ultimate mobile entertainment center. Who knew such a small device held so much? Dont let anyone tell you that their iPod knockoffs (e.g. the ZEN) are better, because iPod is top-of-the-line.

I love it. You must have one. I mean now. Get one. The Ipod is my constant companion. I have an extremely large and varied music collection, and am adding to it all the time. My old 40GB model was over flowing and had reached the stage of low battery life. Ive had the new 80GB model for about 3 weeks and have loaded about 38GB worth of music so far. Battery life is much improved, screen is very bright. The touch-wheel on the new one seems a bit more sensitive. With the increased capacity I can load music at higher bit rates, 192kbs and above.

I bought this as a 20th anniversary present for my husband who has a vast collection of classical music and books on tape. He had never wanted an iPod because of the "trendiness" of it. He loves it!!! He is never without it, alsways listening to something. He was very pleased with the ease of operation, the capacity to hold his whole library and have so much room to add. I love my ipod 80 gb. I owned a 30 gb before it got stolen so I upgraded to 80 gb. battery lasts forever with this one since they put in that new screen that is brighter. I watched 8 hours worth of video on one charge. Have owned it 3 weeks and only charged it 3 times and I use it alot everyday.

This is my 3rd Ipod and by far my favorite. I quickly transferred over 5000 songs and videos to it and then put 9 movies on it and still have TONS of room. Who needs a portable DVD player on a plane when you have this. Just make sure you have the battery charged full before you get on the plane because one movie almost uses the entire battery life. And if you dont have good eyesight you may want to watch a movie on something else. Oh and download the full screen version of the movie so it takes up the entire screen.

This is my first MP3 player and I love it. I am giving it four stars only because the battery isnt removable. I only use it for music and dont really care about video or any other uses. I have a lot of music and am up to 9800 or so songs and it is a little over half way full!
If you have a ton of music and video, this is the product for you.
The Creative Zen 60gb player is getting great reviews on C-Net and other sources. I was torn between these players and went for the 80 gigs!

Just search throught the easy to use menu and you are in music bliss for hours! If you are like me and hate hearing the same songs over and over, this is for you.

I finally bought into the Ipod hype this January and purchased 2 80 gigs; one for me and my Sis. Its a very good device with lots of plusses and few minues. The one thing I MUST WARN about is to not run or even jog on a treadmill with your 80 gig Ipod. Im a distance runner and 30 minutes into running on the treadmill the Ipod will skip and go out. My Ipod was in a sports armband when this happened. A screen would repeatedly pop up saying something about a firmwire accessory not being supported when there was nothing even plugged into the Ipod. I disregarded it and eventually got pretty much burned in the end. Now my Ipod is recognized by any computer and the only way I can charge it is to use a dock. And even when its charged, the battery drains so dramatically fast that it lasts 2 hours tops. Ive even fully charged it and let it sit overnight and the battery manages to drain itself overnight. So now I cannot add anything to it and I havent even filled half of it. Moral of the story, do not use your Ipod while excercising. Luckily my Sis never used the Ipod I bought her so Im hoping to get it from her. But I still threw $350 bucks to the wind none the less...

This iPod has great quality, even without iTunes plus (Some people might not know what that is). It has amazing quality for videos also. I was amazed at how clean the picture was! Although the one downside was it had a lot of fingerprints on the finish and it could scratch without a case on.

I got my Ipod, and immediately it started working. Then, all of a sudden, it flipped out and stopped. I couldnt get it running. I tried the soft reset, nothing. Then I finally called the applecare and they told me to do the soft reset (toggle the hold switch, then hold the menu/center buttons together). After the apple logo comes on, you then stop holding the menu/center and click the center & play button together. This saved my ipod, and me from the hassle of returning it to Amazon.

I bought this 80GB iPod video to replace my 2-year-old iPod mini (the battery was shot), and also to serve as an external hard drive for my PC laptop. So far its working great, and I love it! My music, movies, podcasts, etc. are easy to navigate through the menus, and the iPod itself is very easy to use. The click-wheel is not as sensitive as it was on my mini, so I no longer have any problems with music unintentionally skipping or pausing. My videos show up great on the color screen, and even low-definition videos I download from YouTube or elsewhere appear to be high-quality on my iPod screen. I have most of my music library (about 5,000 songs) and 5 videos (including 4 full-length movies) on the iPod, and its not even half way full yet. I have absolutely no regrets about this purchase.
However, the biggest drawback is that the screen and body of the iPod smudges very easily due to fingerprints. I would have also preferred that it come with a belt clip -- I used the belt clip that came with my iPod mini whenever I took it out of my carrying case. The dock that comes with this iPod in the box is very flimsy and I couldnt use it. The carrying case that comes with is it OK and will help protect the iPod from smudging and damage until you manage to procure a better carrying case (I ordered the Belkin II with kickstand). Also, I originally intended to purchase the black iPod, but the price went up at the last minute so I bought this one instead. I have absolutely no regrets about this purchase -- Amazon has the cheapest price on the Internet because they offer free super saver shipping on the iPod itself and also on the carrying case I purchased along with my iPod.
Side note: I sold my iPod mini online to a trading company called NextWorth, and they are giving me cash for it. I recommend this if you are replacing an old iPod with this one.

This is a very easy to use product as long as you have iTunes. Everything for the most part is self explanitory. However I have some gripes. It says here about crossfading songs. But that only works and is used in iTunes, not for your iPod.
It also says in this description that you can tweak the equalizer...um there is no equalizer. Maybe I missed it, but I looked through everthing to find it. All there is are sound presets. Like hip hop, rock, jazz, etc. I cant find one that I like. I dont have the sound blasting, and I have very good headphones (stock ones suck), but when there are a lot of guitars and bass in a song, it sounds almost distorted, like th iPod cant handle it. And over all, all songs sound a littel too crispy. All the sound presets add either too much treble or too much bass. And if you turn off the presets its too plain and flat. I thought maybe there might be something wrong with it, but I know two other people that have the 80G iPod and theirs sounds the same.
So considering my 3 year old Pioneer MP3 CD player has much better sound than a brand new iPod, Im dissapointed and must complain. If Im doing something wrong, could someone reply to this and give some suggestions?
Other than this complaint, I rather like my iPod. So 4 stars not 5.

An 80 GB hard drive in the back of my palm - my entire music collection, my favourite photos, now even some videos and podcasts, all can go where I go. I recently purchesed the 80 gig Ipod. I also decided to go with one day shipping. I lived at the time in a apartment complex.
DHL shipping said they "attempted to deliver, but patron was not home." Which Is false, I was at home the entire day. DHL could not even find the apartment complex(maybe the large signs wernt enough?)
It wasnt until 6:45 that night did they deliver the IPOD, not too the apartment, but the office. The clear and large numbers above each building were apparently out of sight for them.
The package itself was bare, with only the IPOD in a box with NO INSTRUCTIONS, only the Ipod, a 50 cent cloth case to it,earbuds, and a USB cord. I knew what to do, but how would someone with out experience with PC Hardware?
The first few days with the IPOD were enjoyable, it was my first MP3 player. I had a massive CD and DVD collection, I began ripping them and coverting them. I put about 12 hours of movies on there, which took about 4-6 to convert to the IPOD format, and another 3 or 4 for music.
I return home from vacation, download I tunes and plug in my ipod. Ready to put in some more music that I have on my computer at home. When I receive a messege.
"Ipod can only be synhed with one instance of Itunes at a time, all data must be deleated in order to put new music on."
So in other words, I wasted 16 hours converting and placing files on the IPOD, only to have to deleate them 3 days later.
The product itself is good, the service and software is horrible.

i just bought mine 1 1/2 month ago and im already having problems with it freezing up (judging from other reviews, thats a recurring problem with i-pods). after i sync or charge it, using my mac-book, the "do not disconnect" sign does not turn off. when i reset the i-pod, the apple logo stays on for at least five minutes before it reboots. the problem, needless to say, is really annoying. ill send it to apple and see whether the problem gets solved, but in the meantime, i rate the product only 3/5.

Only Problem I have is that I wish it would work with the NIKE shoes. The Nano is the only model that it works with. I dont what to spend money on a Nano so I can use the Nike shoe features.

I decided to get this 80GB iPod in order to store my CD collection. It seems that I will never run out of space in this iPod. The only problem Ive had so far is that sometimes it stops working for 3 up to 10 seconds, and then it starts working again. This only happens when turning the wheel around and when plugged into the monster cable in the car. Im pretty satisfied, though.

There are a lot of MP3 players out on the market but this is the most marketed version of them all. The advantage of mass marketing is the availability of any accessory you ever need or can imagine. That is why I chose none other than the 80 GB and the 30 GB IPOD video.
Since we also own the Bose speakers, I figure that we should have both MP3 players branded by Apple. Initial set up requires charging the unit which is through your USB cable or the Bose speakers. I chose the latter.
Next, I proceeded to download iTunes. Set up was easy and I just added my library by dragging it into the iTunes window. Sound quality is very good for a compressed format but still doesnt compare to the actual CD. The controls are intuitive and easy to use. The simple design keeps me from messing things up. Playlists are easy to set up.
I converted a DVD to see what it looked like on the IPOD. I can say that its not bad looking to watch a movie (micro-style). I may download some TV shows and other videos from iTunes in the very near future since its convenient and priced appropriately.
I do recommend getting a screen protector before even opening the box so you dont get a nasty scratch on it.

You cannot go wrong with either the 30GB or the 80GB versions. Downloading Podcasts or Vodcasts are so easy. Its so easy to subscribe to programs. That is the greatest advantage to getting the Apple.

This comes included with games and an easy to use system! It can hold 2000 songs, hours of videos, and thousands and thousands of photos, just imagine all of the things you can store. the ipod is better than any other MP3 player because of its add ons. people complain about the screen size, well guess what, theres an accessorie that makes its screen 7 inches which is more than any other Mp3 player. besides apple has been working and modifing ipod for years its better than the zune because its skinnier and has a longer battery life. also you can get a case to stop it from scratching. its eighty gig so you probably wont run out of space. itunes is also good because you can buy movies and games and podcasts and such. on top of that, if you have an apple computer you can quickly download all of the new music* the i pod is the best
*i know from experiance i have an apple computer and the ipod is the only way to go besides windows sucks and vista made it suck even more

If you want to buy a quality MP3 player then Apple should be your only choice. This product tied into ITunes is by far the best way to keep track of and expand your music collection. I also want to mention the video is superoir quality. Everyone who has seen mine was impressed. This is my second IPod. The first was a 60GB, I liked it so much I gave it to my niece and bought another for myself.

First, I am a Mac fan.
Now, I was not quite sure that this was a great buy -- although I like techno gizmos, it was still pricey -- since I am not obsessed with listening to music. Now that I have it, I go nowhere without it. I take it with me completely at work, on trips, on vacations, you name it.
Why? Because I had forgotten how much I do like to listen to music -- but more importantly -- other content rich options. Simple videos, podcasts, calendar and contact (synchronized with my address book and iCal), games such as Sudoku, and the music. I am into foreign language learning, and I have the thing packed with Chinesepod.com content, video clips, and pronunciation drills. When I travel, I download images of Metro and BART maps, and other maps. I cannot begin to think of its limits.
Finally, at night, it is what gets me to relax. Sometimes music, often podcast content (news, etc). TV can be literally played back entirely from public affairs tv by downloading podcast. I am not at the 20 GB point.
BUT, I dont watch movies. First, the screen is too small. Movies just dont cut it for my many-decades-old eyes. But my kids have no problem.
Of course, iTunes make it mindless to update and keep current.

My IPODs are used professionally as I am a DJ. First of all, this is the best IPOD manufactured to date. Plenty of room for everything, and many more options to sort and find your music faster and more efficiently. HOWEVER, the basic issues are still there. Here are my main 3 complaints.
1. How about a REAL on-off switch?? So many times I would think IPOD was powered down, and put on hold and the next day find the battery drained as I am trying to power it up at a gig. Come on, guys. Give us a real on-off switch!!
2. Why not incorporate a trimmed down version of iTUNES to run inside the IPOD itself, allowing for cross-fading and searches by title or artist, or by BPM?
3. Undependable play button, nonexistent cue features. Press play and MAYBE the song will begin, who knows when, so beat mixing is impossible, and that is assumiing the correct song will play as sometimes it goes to the next song without warning! Id rather bring my laptop to the gig!
Other than that, The IPOD 80G is well worth the money. Video, photo and audio quality is excellent. Not for professional use yet, though.

I am overall pretty satisfied with my 80 GB iPod so far, but it isnt perfect. On the plus side you can watch movies with it (Awesome!). You will never run out of room for music, which is why I bought it. On the negetive though, the video iPods hard drives are somewhat slower than the iPod Nanos flash memory. I recently had some strange problems with my iPod, but thats fixed now. They are still too easy to scratch. They dont come with many crucial accessories, you pretty much just get the iPod. Even with these complaints, Im glad I made the purchase.

With its larger fuller color screen now its easy to access videos, album cover art work, videos, and podcasts. The improvements of memory and longer battery life make this an easy upgrade decision. The previous generation iPod which had way less battery life and couldnt handle video. This click wheel makes this super easy to operate.
The iTunes software to rip music takes only seconds and the compression algorithm Apple uses in its software means you can load up several days worth of music and barely make a dent in this iPods storage capacity.

Who needs CDs? They are prehistoric. I feel like a cavemen whenever I walk into a CD store these days. I love the all in one music library I have. Currently, Im almost at 14,000 songs. I have videos to watch on my spare time, which as of now, there is very few of it. My schedule is jammed up with full-time school and full-time work. This iPod makes my day go smoothly wherever I go. Recommended to get the case to protect it. Fragile, obviously. Get the FM Car Transmitter while youre at it for enjoyable car drives.

A typical iPod is a good thing! This device is easy to use, beautiful, sounds fantastic, and is the best device Ive ever bought for what Im using it for. There are many mp3/portable video devices out there but in my opinion its the easiest to manage in terms of getting music and videos on it, its less of a DRM hassle compared to other Microsoft-centric devices, and it intuitive.

I have not had my iPod very long, and this is my first one. I have had no problems with it and love the fact that it would hold my entire CD collection (about 500 CDs) easily more than two times over. The sound is great. Hopefully, it will be a durable product.

Ive had this ipod for the past three weeks, and Im still trying to learn what it can do. For one, the charger got stuck when I powered it for the 2nd time in use and I had to force it out. It also didnt come with a manual, and Im looking now to buy a book about all I can do with the ipod. It plays music, but the main reason why I bought it was to record tv shows and movies, which at this moment Im still not able to do. It seems they make the little device very complicated to get the juice out of it. I was trying to decide wether to buy this ipod or the Zune and decided to buy it based on other reviews I had read. I dont know if I made the right decission at this point. Maybe as I get more software to record my videos into it and as I buy a book on how to get my moneys worth, maybe my opinion about it might change.

My new 80GB iPod video arrived on time. It worked beautifully for about a week and then refused to "synchronize" with iTunes on my desktop. I followed ALL of Apples web-based support suggestions to no avail. I even reformatted my hard drive and did a complete, clean install (Windows XP Media Center). Finally, I relented and called "live" customer service. Under the circumstances, it was a very good call. The tech rep quickly determined from my input that the iPod was defective.
The service support from Apple from this point on was exemplary -- the BEST Ive encountered in a very long time!!! A shipping carton was received within a day with concise instructions. I packaged the product as instructed and returned it. It was acknowledged upon receipt with a tracking number. Within one more day I was advised that a replacement unit will be in my hands by Monday, May 14th .... a total of three days had passed.
My only concern is that I will receive a new unit. The defective unit was in my possession for only three weeks. I would hate to get a refurbished unit under these circumstances.

Havent watched any videos, movies or what not yet, but I am sure thatll be great too hmmkay? Yeah so umm I would strongly recommend that you get some really good ear-phones that are not stock. I hear things on that I-pod in the background cause um Im like a really good listner okay. But I can hear a ping in the background or an extra drum or whatever musical instrument you can think of that I could not hear before and I tried this with different speakers so it is the I-pod.
Its simple yet elegant and the i-tunes program is really simple too. The only problem, if you have the girth of a CD collection, like I have, I hope you have about 8-weeks to sit in front of a computer and load everything on.
Go get the 80-gigger! Its like why buy the 30 when I can just use this for probably years to come. Space is the place to be!

In the 2 months since Ive had the Ipod 80 the only problem Ive had seems to be a unique one, according to the Apple discussion group. Occasionally, while playing a song, it will suddenly stop playback, jump to :02 remaining and quit. I have to press "forward" or "back" to continue. If I press "back", it will replay with no inturruption, indicating that it is not a file transfer problem. This happens randomly. Doing a reset doesnt seem to help and I havent resorted to a full restore; it initially took about 48 hrs. to load 67 gb of music and I havent had the time. Otherwise, its great having my entire CD library (over 700 albums) at my fingertips.

This is one of those products that initially when it comes out you feel its too frivilous to really need. Then once you break down and get one you wonder how you ever got along without it. If you can afford it, the 80 gig is the way to go. While I dont anticipate putting full length movies on it (cant envision watching Lawrence of Arabia on 2.8" screen), I do have a ton of music on it and a number of music videos, and havent even used 2 gigs yet, so I think Im fixed for life! Also, the iTunes store is really pretty good, despite some ommisions, probably due to contract, copyright, or other disputes. One thing I definitely like is that if you miss an episode of your favorite TV show, you can generally download the episode and view it at your leisure. ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, as well as other major cable networks are well represented (no HBO however), but not all shows from each network. Still, the major ones seem well represented.
One caution; occassionally your iPod may "freeze up" once connected to your computer. When this happens, if you hold down the center button and the "Menu" button on the iPod together for approximately six seconds, it will shut the unit off. If you then wait a few seconds and then reconnect it, it should be fine. This is a great product with really good support services. The iTunes store prices are reasonable for music ($0.99/song and $1.99/music video) but a little pricey for movies.

I bought a Shuffle 2G last Dec I love it and it is my favorite player. Then I got into podcast. I own Creative and Sony DAPs and I found that the 80 GB iPod is what I was looking for.
I have avoid jumping on to the iPod bandwagon for years. I love the sound of Sony products especially MiniDisc players but I have a large music collect and travel quite a bit. So I finally bought a 80 GB due to the sound of the Shuffle which I find sounds better.
I was able to put 11,000+ songs on to it and iTunes is a lot easier to use compared to Sonic Stage. I was also able to put a dozen full length movies and TV Shows as well. The screen is small but surprisingly very good. Since I travel it is nice to view while traveling and on Hotel TVs. I view mostly a Sonic Impact LCD viewer and music system which I highly recommed.
The battery life isnt like any Sony device but not bad considering what the iPod does. I dont need to pull out a laptop or travel with the palm pilot any more.
Find speed is kind of slow though.

The ipod has really made things nice. Its integrated into my car, my work, my home, my school, and anywhere I go. I love it. The video is a life saver for trips. Make sure to find a good converter though, so you dont have to re-buy movies you already have on DVD. I use PQDVD, it works great.

For some reason it took me a while to finally buy an IPOD. I was hesitant because I wanted to see how the competition would respond. Given that its an Apple product, I really dont know why I waited. WOW! I love this thing! Its clean lines and intuitive design make maneuvering through screens fun and easy. As are most things Apple, its sumptuous sound quality is great! And for those of us who spend a lot of time in airports, its elegant design make it an ideal travel companion. Battery life and its sometimes sluggish behavior between screen changes could be improved; thus, my conservative rating. But please dont be fooled by my conservative rating because Apples 80 GB IPOD video Black (5.5 Generation) is delicious. Because my wife and I have different musical tastes we have two IPODS; along with two Bose SoundDock Docking stations. We are both very pleased!

I recently bought this new iPod and since owning it a while I have changed my opinion of it. (see update below) I use it about everyday and enjoy it a lot. It is great being able to carry music and pictures and other things around that you can use at home or in the car or a trip.
I have heard people talk about how they scratch easy so the first thing I did was go to the Dollar Store and buy a sleeve for it. I dont have any scratches on mine at all. The battery lasts a long time and when you connect it to your computer it automatically charges and loads anything that you may have recently placed in the iTunes software. iTunes is pretty easy to use although it still wants to get artwork from the iTunes store even after you turn that option off. So it still seems to have a few bugs in it. You dont really need instructions for operating either because it has been thought out pretty good and after messing around with it for a little bit anyone can figure out how it operates. The sound quality using the ear buds is good and they arent too big for your ears. There might be something better out there but compared to the muvo I used before it is night and day.
The way I had my music tagged would not let it come up on the iPod directory the way I wanted it so I had to go through and re-tag a bunch of stuff which took hours. This is the one quirky thing that is a bother because if the files are not tagged exactly right the software will place your music in some stupid setup like under artists you might have 5 or 10 different listings for the same artist. It might take a while before you find out exactly what works and what doesnt. I have MusicMatch on my computer and I used that to edit the tracks so it comes up on the iPod the way I want it to. If there was anything that was kind of a pain that was it because I hadnt planed on going through my entire library and re-tagging it all.
Update: After having it for a couple months I would say that I am happy but at the same time aggravated. Having to change the tagging of all your music to get it to show up on the iPod in the right folders is a pain. That is my biggest complaint and I cant believe how quirky this thing is. Everything has to be exactly right and then sometimes it still doesnt display music in proper folders. Like a lot of things the software is probably over engineered making how things are displayed complicated instead of easy. I would not give it 5 stars anymore and if I could change it I would make it a 3 star. Actually I would give the software a 1.

After Receiving a New 80 GB VIDEO IPOD as a gift I tested out this new gadget and quickly opened the box. What comes included are Earbuds, USB Wire, Ipod unit and plastic cradle for accesories. First The Ipod Video comes with no CD. This is no big deal and actually becomes useless once new versions of Itunes come out anyway. So I downloaded I tunes and was off to get my AVI Video onto the new IPOD. But later found out the IPOD only accepts MPEG-4. Coverting takes about 1 hour so I made some coffee. Once converted everything was simple , plugged in the ipod and it synched up and the video played fine. I then noticed aweful smudges on my brand new Ipod. Maybe smooth and pretty isnt actually smart for a device like this as fingerprints and scratches will soon make the new player look weeks old. Apple could have make finger proof case surface...but it would not be as shiny and cool looking. The interface is bright and easy to navigate with new games like pacman and Bejeweled at itunes store ready to download.
Another thing missing from the box is any Charger. Except for the USB wire that charges The IPOD while hooked up to the computer , you must purchase one seperately. This should have been included for $350.00
If your buying a portable device your going to need a charger to plug into the wall sooner or later. While I felt that Apple could have added in AVI Compatibility, making it easier to use, its really a neat device to bring on long trips for music, games but as far as videos and movies go Watching a full movie on a 2.5 inch screen loses something and quickly get tired at staring at it. Not bad Apple but you could have done better.

I did a lot of research before buying a new MP3 player;before the iPod, I only had an iRiver IFP-390T with 256 MB of RAM. I like using that to work out with, but I needed something to hold more songs, and I wanted to be able to dock/play it on decent speakers in my apartment. So it was down to the Creative Zen 60GB player and the 80GB iPod. I basically chose the iPod because of the extra 20 GB of storage...I didnt want to have to buy a new player for a while. Heres what I like and dont like so far:
PROS
1. Videos - Ive downloaded the trial version of some software that lets you rip DVDs to watch them on your iPod, and the video quality is really good.
2. Navigation - I like that I can listen to my music by artist, album, or song...and that I can shuffle them all.
CONS
1. No stock radio feature - Im surprised no one else seems to care about this that much, but I think its a little odd that Apple makes you pay $50 for the radio add on...after all, didnt the portable music player revolution start with the Walkman?! Im suprised this hasnt been mentioned as much since I consider it a basic feature. It wasnt a huge deal for me since my iRiver has a radio feature (in fact, I can record the radio feed on my iRiver!).
2. Playback logic - Suppose I wanted to listen to all my Dave Matthews songs. When Ive finished listening to all of them, the iPod just stops playing music. To me, the logical next step would be to move on to the next artist and play all of those songs. This is especially annoying when Im listening to the iPod on my iSymphony M1 (sorry - not sold at Amazon, otherwise Id write a review) because I have to walk back to the iPod and pick the next artist/album/song I want to hear. Also,
3. Playlist creation - If you have 80 GB of songs, the chances are you are going to hear a song for the first time on your iPod (not your computer). Yet the iPod only lets you add songs to an "on-the-go" playlist, so if youre not near your computer and hear two songs that you think should go on different playlists, youre SOL.
Overall, its a decent player, and iTunes were easier to use to synch it up than I thought it was going to be...

These are the results of my tireless search for quality ipod sound. The ipod can create nothing better than WAV files (CD quality), or 1411 kbps, and 16 bits of depth in the sound. I bought the ipod 80g and had some problems. I manually recorded some music (yeah, it takes forever). Then my computer crashed, then I lost all the song info that I had manually typed. Then I decided to do it the easy way, and just burn-in the discs at 320kbps, and that sounded awful. After you hear the higher quality, you wont go back! Anyway, I found a way to get the BEST sound and protection for your pod. All this stuff I recommend is available on amazon. Im serious...you cant get 24-bit sound from the pod, but this comes close. Keep in mind, this is labor-intensive and takes the purchase of a few more items. But the end result is worth it.
1) You will need two mini-to-mini Monster cables (substitute something similar, but monster-grade gives you a fuller, richer signal). You will need an external Soundblaster X-Fi box. An electric cable doesnt come with it, but there are different cables you can get that are universal electronics cables, or you can order the special X-Fi box cable. Anyway, this unit allows you to pull more sound from a CD signal, enhancing all the nuances and increasing the depth of bass and crispness of highs. It really is incredible, and it makes the songs on the pod "pop" with dimension and color. You will need to situate your home stereo CD player and reciever next to your computer. If the internal soundcard of your computer is a concern, also get a Soundblaster external 24-bit card that plugs into a USB. You also need PD+Rescue software. This is the best way to retrieve the valuable song info if your computer goes ape. Last but not least, get a recording program. The best and cheapest is the Windows Analog recorder, which you can pay-for online and download, cheap.
2)Run a mini cable from your stereo reciever headphone jack to the line-in your X-Fi box, and run a mini to mini from the X-Fi box to the computers internal or external soundcard.
3)Try the settings on the X-Fi box. I highly recommend the highest setting on the 24-bit technology and NO, no 3-D. The 3-D doesnt translate well unless your listening in real time.
4)Listening to the computer with headphones, set the signal from the stereo reciever. Keep your bass, treble, and eq levels where you like them. Usually, the reciever will be low, at about 2 volume points. The volume knob on the X-Fi box will vary, depending on the CD, so you will have to listen and watch the recording levels as you mess with the box dial. Each CD you record will have a different loudness level, so just let the first song run for a minute and make sure it doesnt distort.
5)Press record on the Windows recording program and let the CD go. When the CD is finished, the recording will stop. The windows recorder allows you to cut and paste the songs together, but it does a pretty good job of separating the songs on its own. Manually type the name of the artist and the songs in the fields it gives you. Save to a universal folder, and dump the songs into itunes from there. Itunes will find the CD art, and show it when the album comes on.
6)If your computer eats your stuff, use PD Rescue, but dont select "transfer to itunes." This will get you the songs but not the song titles, or album titles, or anything. A song will be called, "WTTY," and thats it. Instead, select "songlist" options and go to the bottom right corner and select the files to be saved according to song-artist-album. Then, at the top, select "copy to folder," save the songs to a preferred place, and dump them from that folder to itunes. Then you will have the info you need with the songs. Manually typed song info doesnt save backwards the way that burned info does...dont know why.
7)Burn everything you like. You can always save just the lists you want on the go. Saving the WAV files will allow 1800-2000 songs at one time... and it will sound better than a portable CD player.
8)If you want to go the extra mile, try a portable headphone amp and some nice phones. You will hear the quality in these rich files.

Going from a 1gb MP3 to a 80gb Ipod is a birthday dream come true! I would have given the Ipod a 4 or 5 except I was taken back with the fact that for over $300 you cant get a manual...at least on cd! I had to give the name of my first born and an arm just to be able to print out a copy online! Mind you it is 72 pages (my paper and ink)! I successfully loaded over 500 songs and audiobooks from my laptop but my daughter accidently deleted them when she plugged the Ipod into the desk top to add some of her music..Oops! I am trying to reload them from my Itunes library..dont know what the heck Im doing???? My audiobooks were loaded with the songs instead of in the audiobook folder, therefore they play when Im listening to songs..how annoying! Ive gotten several IPod how-to-books and DVDs from the library and they all say that you can fix these issues but dont tell you how..just pure frustration! Ive even logged onto Apples online IPod bullentin board and a few other people have similar problems but no one is giving instructions on how to get it done! Im waiting for one more manual (2007 edition)from the library and perhaps it will hellllllp!

The LCD screen is amazing. Clear, sharp, and packed with colors. TV shows were not only viewable but enjoyable. (I wasnt expecting much from the LCD). And 80GB of disk space? HUGE! My iPod ate my entire collection (22GB) and still has space for more!
The click-wheel feels snappier than previous versions (had a 1st gen). The unit is slimmer than previous versions.
I still cant get over that screen. Like having a crystal-clear HD TV in my pocket.
One note: The unit comes with earbuds and a USB cable. Separate AC power cable is not provided.
Finally, the packaging of the iPod is thoughtful and well-designed. A work of art on its own.
Buy one ASAP.
