The phone works well but it has its limitations and there is missing data in the advertise information. For example it says you longer dont need a computer, but to make it work it have to be conected to the USB port and skype running in the computer, so its not independent from the computer at all. At the same time it is not compatible with MAC OS, and it does say it.
If you want to have your computer on and work with windows its a good phone for the price. Ist simple, no luxury at all but can talk nice. On: 2008-07-31
Very Easy to use
good sound quality
in fact it was much better than my land line phone
so good in fact I called and canceled my land line
easy to use as most of the work is done thru the skype software
very happy with this phone! On: 2008-06-30
I used this phone for a while with my Windows XP machine and loved it. For the money, it did everything it said it would and functioned great as my home phone and skype phone. However, when my computer finally crapped out and I bought a new machine with Vista, I found that this phone is not compatible... sort of.
Its really a crapshoot whether this phone will work with Vista or not. My guess is there was a chipset revision made at some point or something else changed from one production run of the phone to the next since some users got the phone to work with Vista while others, such as myself, get a "Code 10" error when Vista tries to load the drivers. I did everything possible to get this phone working (USB hub firmware upgrade, all Vista updates, latest software from Philips, etc.), but it just wouldnt work.
Unfortunately, this is a pretty common problem and neither Microsoft or Philips seems to care. Philips online help doesnt really help and their customer service really doesnt help much either. They chalk it up to Vista problems and tell you to buy a new phone. Thats really not a good solution.
So in the end, this phone is now worthless to me since I have Vista. Dont get this phone if you have Vista. Buy a standalone Skype phone that isnt computer dependent. Ive learned my lesson. On: 2008-06-15
I had the worst time installing the software(something I usually dont have trouble with)then came trying to figure out how to use it...the instructions are way too vague!! I actually learned how to use it by trial and error and with the help from some of the other reviews here. Thanks everyone! I have to admit this is a really awesome phone..very clear reception! On: 2008-06-01
I had to download new drivers to use it with vista. I wont use it as a regular phone so the disturbance problem shouldnt bother me. The few calls I made from the phone were clear and I didnt have to struggle to speak or hear like with headsets. I wish that I could just dial numbers not in my skype address book but that doesnt bother me too much. I got the phone with the understanding that I would use it for SKYPE so I never expected it to work when my computer is off and Im not logged into skype. When either skype or the phone drivers improve and I can dial a number on the phone without having to put it in my skype contacts then this phone would be a 5. On: 2008-05-03
I already had the Philips 3211 Cordless, which actually plugs directly in to my computer, the great bonus with the Linksy CIT400 is it plugs directly into your wirless router, so your computer does not need to be on to use Skype, unlike the Philips.
The other bonus with the CIT400 is once you have programmed the phone (a child could do it), when you dial a landline you dont have to even dial an area code, providing you are calling a number with the same local area code as yours - so its back to 7 digit dialing - what a treat. However, this is exclusive to the types of phones you plug into the router , all of the phones you connect to your computer (including the Philips 3211) have the big drawback that when calling a regular landline, even in the USA, you have to prefix it with the Country code (ie 001).
I have both types, in two different locations, if youre on a budget and dont mind dialing some extra numbers prior to making landline calls and your computer is on all the time - the Philips 3211 will work OK for you.
If you dont mind investing a few extra bucks, the CIT400 makes life much easier and will work regardless of whether your computer is on or not. On: 2008-05-02

I have only tried using this phone as a landline. The interference is awful. I am wondering why i am having interference, any ideas? I have another cordless phone that has excellant sound quality. I had this same trouble with another cordless phone. I dont think it is the phone, itself. Any help plz On: 2008-03-23
I did not get the product for a long time and when called no one to answer the phone.
I was able to use it may be a few time online, too much disturbance if you use it for lan line use.
Now the skype software doesnt work either, it doesnt detect it and i tried reloading the software but it doesnt work
So not worth the price On: 2008-01-27
This phone did not work with my version of Windows Vista Home Basic. You can download the new drivers and hope for the best; but in my case that didnt work. When I called Philips support they were most curteous, but finally recommended the VOIP 841, a software independent phone, which I finally purchased. It works just fine. On: 2008-01-18
This product is supposed to be Vista compatible, but I could not get it to work, and couldnt find a solution with Philips or Microsoft. This seems to be a commonly reported problem. So I dont recommend this for Vista users. On: 2007-12-30
This phone works great! One of my favorite features is that your phone does not need to be plugged into your computer, only that router looking thing does! the display is great too, you can even see if your contacts are away and everything. the sound quality is very good and the phone does not interfere with any signals. Ive had this phone for about 2 months and use it daily as my substitute for a phone. I only have a pay-as-you-go phone for a real phone so I spend about 15-120 minutes daily on this VOIP phone using Skype. It has been spectacular. After the brief installation, it was set to go. I simply activate the software each time I boot up my computer (double-click on the icon I placed on the desktop), let the software and Skype start up for about 15-30 seconds, and then Im off to call whomever I want with SkypeOut. [For reference, Im running on Windows XP SP2.]
Sound quality has been excellent on both my ends, which has been my main issue with hardware with Skype. I have had 3 different microphones and one USB Skype phone for over a year prior to getting this phone and they offered a range of sound quality with the most notable differences on the other end (could they understand me or not? I could always understand them). With this phone, there havent been sound issues. It isnt the best but it is at the higher end of the spectrum of what Ive used.
My next Skype phone will be a WiFi phone but that wont happen until their prices drop (a lot) and they are easier to setup on networks. This phone was one of my best purchases of the last year. On: 2007-12-16

Update: still going strong in Feb, 08. Ill update if anything changes. On: 2007-10-29
I read all the reviews on this phone carefully before buying and was a little bit anxious when I did decide to purchase it. However, since I have had it I have been very, very pleased with it. I use it for Skype and with my Time Warner cable phone line and it works great for both. I love the ease at which you can switch between internet and land phone. The range is very impressive and you can comfortably sit some distance from the base and get excellent sound quality. The battery life is also very long for me.
In short, a very nice surprise. I cant imagine there being a better Skype phone out there at the moment. On: 2007-09-05
This is a simple device that has allowed us to avoid connecting a phone line to our house and save $. Pros: Rings like a normal phone, Extremely cheap to run, As easy as a normal phone to call someone. Cons: You can only receive calls from another skype user, Computer must be on to use.

I wasnt sure about buying this because a lot of people seemed to have problems with it, but decided to take the chance anyway, and i am so glad. it works as a regular phone, you can take both your landline and internet calls with it. instalation is as simple as it can be. to use with skype, i saved all the numbers i regularly call (not that many) and then i just push the skype button on the phone and can see whos online, then all my saved constacts. makes it easy. otherwise push and hold 0 for the + then add area code and phone number, or 011 country code area code and phone number, then push the skype button. i also got skype in which allows people from my home country to make a local call from their phone and reach me. worth looking into if you have friends and relatives in other states or overseas. I brought this phone 2 days ago and am already in love with it! It is very convenient, sleek, great voice quality.... and the best is the dual phone effect.
I rate it at 4 stars due to 2 minor flaws... which can be easily overcome.... but very poorly documented by Philips.
1. Skype Out calls: As pointed out by others in the review, the trick is to dial 001 and the number and then hit the RED SKYPE button and NOT the talk button. The talk button is for normal phone. This is not very well documented.
2. PC SPeakers: The software automatically changes the default speaker and microphone to PhilipsVOIP321 codec. So you should change it back to Windows Default or any other Codec you use - both in Skype and in the Audio Settings in Control Panel. Restart would be helpful after this.
however another thing is that each time you use the phone, the PC audio is muted.... So once your call is over, go to the sound settings and unmute the Wave bar and increase the volume!
This is a small price to pay for the other unique features!!
Highly Recommended! On: 2007-07-28
Here are my comments:
I found the 321 easy to install but not so easy to operate. Poor instructions and not intuitive. The FAQs on the CD totally missed how to operate. Documentation on the CD is limited and sometimes confusing.
The 321, unlike more expensive models, needs a PC with a reasonably modern operating system. Skype must be running, at least to see contacts. I havent tried originating a Skype call without having Skype running on the PC, but I would guess that it wouldnt work. It isnt all that inconvenient to leave the PC running with Skype running.
Making a Skype call that isnt in the contact list isnt as obvious as it could be. Ive looked at the CD and the instructions in the box and the post about how easy it is... nothing works. It looks like the 321 was rushed to market with little investment made in make sure it was easy to operate. If/when I understand this phone, Ill do another post. On: 2007-07-26
The phone is easy to set up and works great. It has a speaker phone and a key lock feature (in case you have young kids). Multiple fun ring tones.
Like others have said, it is easy to dial out to a landline not in your Skype list. Just hold the 0 button for literally 2 seconds to get the plus sign up, then dial the number you want and press the Skype button.
I phoned my sister this afternoon, who incidentally, has the same phone. Im in the US and shes in Australia, the call was crystal clear, no delay, no echo, it was just as if we were speaking on a regular house phone except it didnt cost anything!
The only negative is that the phone took over my speakers, as did another Skype phone I tried. However, for the price, its sound quality and cordless feature, I still highly recommend it. On: 2007-07-26
I got this phone today but its unclear whether or not the computer actually needs to be switched on to use the phone?? If anyone can help..I would really appreciate it!! I also have to note that the photo does not do the phone justice, it is much more esthetically pleasing than it looks in the photo! Very sleek and modern appearance. Sorry I cannot provide more information on the phones functionality. On: 2007-07-25

I do not have a land line. I am looking to hook up to skype and I am interested in this phone. In the description it says it you connect it to your pc, land line and wall plug. Can I just plug it into my computer ans I am good to go, or do I have to have a land line to pluge it into as well? any insight would be appriciated.
Thanks! On: 2007-06-06

It took me 3 minutes to get this thing working. Recieve Skype calls and calls over your phone line. (Jack into phone line, and USB into computer).
The phone works great. Remote access to your skype contacts. Cancel your long distance now... On: 2007-05-02
Ergonomically this phone is wonderful: the functions are obvious and the hand feel and ear feel are comfortable and well-built. Follow the guidelines of the other reviewers to get your sounds and devices set up, and your Skype options. Kudos to those who worked out how to make a SkypeOut call without the number being in the Contact List. Also: Dont have your old headset/mic for Skype plugged into your sound card at the same time as your speakers...youll get feedback in the speakers. As Skype continues to upgrade their software (the latest version frames phone numbers on web pages and allows you with one click to add them to your Skype contacts) this will be the premiere VoIP solution. My only wish is that the LCD readout had tinier letters -- it needs them. On: 2007-04-23
I originally bought this phone when it was $100. Really neat stuff. It CAN DIAL ANY NUMBER THROUGH SKYPE!!! just hold the 0 to get a "+" sign and the number and hit the skype key. Cool that they went with AAA batteries instead of an obscure pack. Great distance - 100 feet from the second floor through 6 walls and sounds great. Personally I am going to buy the new Philips voip cordless with Skype engine built in and use this only when my computer is docked. I am going to take the plunge and go POTS-less!
As far as drivers go, despite it saying only good with Skype 2.5, works without problem on 3.1. If you get a second handset, you can talk handset to handset also. by: spicetrader On: 2007-02-14
Ive had excellent experience with this phone. I bought it to make regular phone calls over the Skype network (as a SkypeOut subscriber), and it does that beautifully. The sound is clear. The range of the wireless communication to base is better than my cordless phones -- I can walk all the way out to the mailbox (50 feet from house) with no loss of call quality. Its dual function as a regular telephone is quite satisfactory. I do have it connected to an old computer which serves only as an internet connection to Skype -- I dont know how it would do if it had to contend with other uses on the host computer. On: 2007-01-13
In our firm we use quite extensively the skype phones for international calls.
We have tried the netgear wi-fi phones but we have had some troubles with installation on the network.
Then we moved to these philips voip 321.
Unortunately we confirm that we cannot dial a skype number if it is not already on the contacts ( possibly unless you do some complicated procedures ). Moreover the phone is quite pricey.
However since the construction and the sound are of good quality and we had no troubles during the installation we decided to use these phones.
Our opinion is tha the hardware is very good but the software should be improved.

You most certainly can make out bound calls using Skype even when they are not in your contact list!
1. Press and hold "0" till a "+" shows up.
2. Dial the number including country and area code.
3. Hit the Skype button, not the green talk button.
Skype then dials your number even if you do not have it in your contacts. This is a great phone!

I initially bought the Philips VOIP 321 (VOIP3211G/37). After fighting the Philips drivers/software for several hours I returned it and bought the DualPhone RTX3055 instead. Within five minutes the DualPhone was up and working exactly as expected. I didnt encounter any of the difficulties I had encountered with the Philips.
Once Philips solves their driver/software issues their phone will probably be a great product. Until that time I strongly recommend the DualPhone over the Philips. It doesnt look as snazzy as the Philips, but works far better. The sound quality is even clearer than the Philips. On: 2006-12-26
As said before, this has little value if you can NOT dial a number via skype not in your skype contacts. You have to dial a number from the PC, then save that number in your Skype contacts, and only THEN are you able to dial through SkypeOut. It is more than a real pain in the neck, it makes this product unusable. On: 2006-12-25

Great sound quality and even better range this phone works much better than I imagined. The phone has a feel of quality. I agree with the comments made by grn4jd and I should add that grn4jds comments made me realize how to dial directly from the handset. The fault that people are making about dialing directly is because of the bad documentation, also Philips tech support is not great about how to configure the phone not to disable the computer speakers. I actually found the fix to this at Philips online Knowledge base. I wont go in the details but it has something to do with going into Control Panel>Sounds and also you need to go into Skype>tools>options>sound devices and choose "Audio in, Audio out & Windows default device" then reboot. As far as dialing out directly from the phone, its simple, dial the prefix 001 then the 10 digit number then press the red Skype button. The only thing wrong with this phone is that the computer needs to be on for it to run Skype and there are phones out there than run independent of the computer but their not for me because they make Skype the default connection over the landline phone.
EDIT: I am editing my review to add a comment. The reviews of this phone are interesting, this phone seems to get either 5 stars or 1 star and I chalk that up to people figuring out how to dial directly out and also to those that didnt figure out how to fix any conflict with the phone and sound cards. Definitely this phone easily dials out using Skype directly. I posted my solution to dial the prefix 001 and the reviewer Matt B. posted another solution that looks even easier than my solution. Also with some aggravation, I believe the sound card conflict can always be solved. The solution lies within ControlPanel>Sounds and the Skype Toolbar. On: 2006-11-28
Until they have fixed the "unable to dial SkypeOut numbers from the handset" problem, and resolved the "disables my laptop speakers unless I uninstall the phone" problem.
Like another reviewer said -- the phone is very elegant, feels great, and is of superior quality in many respects. However, it is not possible to dial a number directly on the handset. You have to dial a number from the PC, then save that number in your Skype contacts, and only THEN are you able to dial through SkypeOut. It is a real pain in the neck. On: 2006-11-24
All I want to do is a simple SkypeOut call by dialing the number myself - i.e. WITHOUT going through my Skype contacts. Ive spent HOURS trying to get it to do this. The review above says you need to prefix the number with the + sign by holding down 0. Ive tried this several times - e.g. +1 222 333 4444 - but it still inists on trying to dial a call via landline.
Also, Im getting intermittent problems with my broadband connection since installing the driver for the phone. It just cuts out without warning and the only way to get it back online is to disable and then re-enable the connection in the Network Connections window. I NEVER used to get this problem before installing the driver for this phone.
Im on the way back to the store to ask for my money back.

Bought this phone to work with my laptop at the office, and so far it is working really well. I can call from anywhere in the office (which is about 20,000 sq ft), and reception is great. Interface with Skype 2.5 works great, and it is pretty easy to browse thru your Skype contacts list on the phone. There are only a few minor issues so far:
. Skype 2.5 allows you to view you MS Outlook contacts within the Skype application, but these contacts are not displayed on the phone.
. I have to turn off the phone software when undocking my laptop, because Windows XP doesnt like to let you undock or hibernate with an active USB connection.
. The instructions dont tell you how to make an outbound SkypeOut call instead of the landline. I finally figured out that you have to hold down the 0 key (which is +) -- always prefacing the phone number with the + will initiate an outbound SkypeOut call.
UPDATED: A few of the subsequent reviewers have said that the information on SkypeOut calls is not true. You have to push the red Skype button on the phone to initiate the SkypeOut call. Pushing the green Talk button will dial the number (even with the + prefix) using the landline.
If you are in the Skype Contacts list, you can also push the red Skype button to call the selected contact.
