Fantastic picture quality, great natural looking colors and surprisingly good sound highlight this wonderful set. Purchased from Amazon 12/22 and we had it by year end, we are thrilled with the performance of this JVC.
A couple of things to watch out for. First, in an incredible display of corporate shortsightedness, JVC decided to cripple the firewire (1394) ports on this TV, mangling them so that they only accept JVC equipment. Pause to consider the magnitude of corporate stupidity here. An industry standard input port, IEEE1394, that they decide should be degraded so that only JVC works with it. So these ports are virtually useless to the average consumer who may just want to hook up, for instance, a Sony camcorder. Why did they stop with just this input. Why didnt they make is so that ALL the input ports only accept JVC equipment. JVC-only HDMI, JVC-only component video, and so on? Maybe because then nobody would buy it?
The other shortcoming is the menu system, which is atrocious, and cumbersome to navigate. Chief complaint here is the "input" selection, which forces the user to scroll through all the choices which takes about 20 seconds since the TV blanks and freezes for about 4 seconds with each change.
All in all, its a state-of-the art picture quality in a very attractive package with a small, tasteful bezel and stand. The sound, should you decide to use it (most owners of TVs like this have 5 channel surround, but occassionally you may find a reason to use the sets speakers) is very, very good.
Id give this a perfect score, but the foolish waste of the firewire ports and the poorly done on-screen navigations (which, by the way, can be overcome with a smart remote such as Harmony) force me to knock it down bit. I give this one a 95 rating and a definite strong buy recommendation. On: 2006-11-02
In early October, we ordered the slightly less expensive FN97 through Amazon from Beach Audio. When the set came with internal damage, Kris Freeman of Beach Audio took it all in stride. The FN97 model was out of stock, so he sent us this model, the FH97, at no extra charge. The new set was delivered and the damaged one picked up at the same time.
The picure on this set is amazing. My husband was pleasantly surprised. We probably sit closer than most people do, about seven feet away, but with a football game, in HD, WOW. With an travel show of the Grand Canyon, when the helicopter banks, you feel like you have to lean with it.
The internal cooling fan is much quieter than some reviews led me to believe.
There is very little reflection from windows across the room bouncing light off the screen. We like the black thin frame surrounding the screen because of the lack of distraction while watching at night. You can even turn down (or off) the intensity of the blue power button light.
Right now, we have it hooked up with the 1080i component output from the SA 3250HD cable box. We have Knology cable. The HDMI input (this set has two) might be even better.
We have the set sitting on the Plateau CR-2V(64) stand that we also ordered through Amazon. This stand is within one-eighth an inch of the sets width of 64 and one-eighth inches. On carpet, with the spike feet, the stand is about eighteen inches high. The middle of the screen comes out to a little under 45 inches from the floor.
So far, we are very pleased.
