buy at your own risk!     On: 2008-04-07

Hopefully more potential buyers will research Magnavoxs pathetic track record with their LCD TVs before shelling out the money for their products.

Its been barely a year and its already gone out. Black screen, blinking green light, no picture or sound.

The amount of complaints on various boards (just Google it) about this TVs tendency to break down in a very short time, as well as the extreme and woeful inability and unwillingness of Magnavoxs consumer department to help, is staggering.

BUYERS BEWARE: Purchase Magnavoxs overpriced, shoddy products at your own risk. Avoid at all costs. You would be better served putting the money you were going to shell out for it in a tidy pile and setting it on fire.
Worst TV I ever bought     On: 2007-11-10

Around June 2007, I bought a Philips/Magnavox 37 LCD TV, The quality is just so, After less than 5 month, the TV is dead. There is no picture.
I have bought so many TVs in the past 20 years. This is one with the shorted life.

Poor Sound System - Low Humming and Static Noise     On: 2007-06-02

We have the TV for 6 months now.
The persistent humming sound spoils our TV watching experience. We tried DVD and other inputs such as video games and Karaoke. The humming noise is presistent. The static noise come with HDTV programs. DVD seems to be fine.

Purchase extented warrenty if you must have this TV. By default, Magnavox only covers labor for the first 6 months, although parts are one-year under warranty.

Weve had many TVs over the years. The Magnavox 37" LCD has poorest quality. We would not recommend it.

Extremely Pleased     On: 2007-04-13

I actually have model #37MF331D, which is the same TV in silver instead of black. Ive owned mine for about 2 weeks as of the writing of this and I am very happy with it. The sound quality is impressive and the picture quality is outstanding. I looked at several TVs in the $1,000 price range (got this for $993 on sale at Sams Club and at that time, Wal-Mart had the black one for $997) and bought this one based on the in-store experience alone. I viewed it side-by-side with a Sony Bravia and the picture was pretty darn close in brightness and clarity. I also played with the remote and couldnt believe how good it sounded in the middle of a noisy warehouse store.

One thing to keep in mind is that no matter what LCD you buy, it wont look that good when viewing analog (non-HD, non-digital signal). So dont take the plunge into flat panel LCD until you are ready to upgrade your service. We use satellite, which gives us a digital signal, so even our non-HD channels look good. And the high definition channels? Well, theyre breathtaking. DVDs also look fantastic (make sure youre have a modern progressive scan DVD player, though).

Okay, so thats my glowing review of this TV.

The only negative is that it TV seems to have a little trouble displaying warm colors, especially reds. Sometimes they get a bit blocky and sometimes theyre too bright. But if you jump around in the convenient color settings and even fiddle with your own custom setting, you can alrgely overcome this problem. About the only time it really stands out to me is if theres like a big red wall on screen -- then you definitely will see some blockiness. But to me its a minor flaw in an otherwise great TV.

I highly recommend it.

Surround Sounds     On: 2007-04-11

This tv is the best tv I have ever purchased. Saying that it is my firts flat screen LCD TV. What is the best way to adjust or to get the best quality picture I can. When I watch Cable TV it still seems a little pixelated at times or around the edges. Also how do I hook up my surround sound? I cannot find any audio out jax anywhere. I had my surround sound hooked up to my last 20 inch tube tv by hooking it to the out audio jax in the back. Do I need a certain jack? The stock speakers are good for my room size but im used to having the bass and surround sound. Other than that this tv is amazing for the price and I plan on keeping mine for a long time. Friends and family are very envious of it.

37MF331D/37 silver model from sams club     On: 2007-04-04

Hard to find reviews on this model offered at Sams club so thought I would give my input. Excellent HDTV! Outstanding picture, easy set up. Have had for 2 weeks and no issues. Wife is even amazed at picture and is sold on the HD channels, the claity is amazing. DVDs look great as well even with s video cable.
Sound is great through stock speakers
Regardless of what you read Magnavox is still affiliated with Philips, Philips literature comes with the owners manual and is in the box.
Great TV, great buy
Awesome price ($997 @ Sams)
5 yr warranty/replacement only $79 from Sams
It's alright. Audio could have been better.     On: 2006-12-29

The main thing that gripes me about this TV is there is no selection to switch back and forth between cable TV and an Antenna. Also I can not figure out how to hook up my surround sound speakers to this thing. I had the speakers hooked up to a 27" regular TV with no problem. The only things in the back are the AV plugs for hooking up DVD players, VCRs , gaming consoles, and the HDMI hookup. I can not get the audio from regular TV to come through the surround sound. I have the surround sound hooked up to one of the AV places, the red, white, and yellow plugs, and it will work as a DVD player but that is it. I am used to listening to TV through my surround sound but now I have to listen just through the TV speakers. Any way on to the picture. It looks great in that department. I have an Xbox 360 hooked up to it with a HD-DVD player and the HD-DVDs look awesome. Just disappointed with the audio hook up and the selection between cable and antenna.
Great TV     On: 2006-12-14

This is my first Widescreen HDTV and I have been satisfied in every way. The price is very reasonable for the quality you get. The picture even looks great with analog cable.
The assembly and setup was very simple and I completed it myself in under an hour. The only thing, which I assume is fairly normal for digital TV, was that it took about half an hour for the search to find and configure all the channels. The viewing angle is great. You can sit well off to the side and still see the picture clearly. I would highly recommend this TV for anyone getting started building their home theatre. I only take away one star due to there are larger and higher end TVs out there, but for the price it cant be beat.

Don't even take this one home     On: 2006-11-23

Im reviewing this because of the lack of private ownership info on the web for this TV.
my 16 year old magnavox 19 inch finally quit. 16 year old TV is a great brand name selling point to me. What do I know, I havent bought a TV for 16 years.
This one is almost a month old. bought 10/25/06. Its now 11/22/06. Today marks the 4th anniversary that the remote control has lost control of the tv. B4 you say its the remote. I have to turn the machine off at the wall outlet [remove power] to shut it off and gain control either by tv controls or remote controls.
I am just hoping this is as bad as its going to get.
the 16 yr old magnavox lost the tuner at the 9 year mark. at the 16 year mark it lost synch of the signal from the VCR feeding the signal.

Here you need to know. It requires a FLASH EXTERNAL USB memory module, an internet connection and a computer to download updates and transfer the update to the USB memory to update the TVs software.
It is not necessary to update the software to use the TV. It works out of the box.
2nd problem. The update at Magnavox is NOT labeled so that you can match the available update, with the current system software. IOW to check the updated software at magnavox can be VERY costly if you dont already have the computer and USB memory.
I had to buy the USB memory, and when using it, it did NOT auto install the way the book says. install USB to TV. Turn on TV, auto loads USB memory. NOT!
You must use the config menu, then you find the update at magnavox is the SAME as the tvs software.
B4 I forget my 16 yr old TV had the time display when changing channels, or hitting the info button.
Youd think for such an expensive TV, when you set the clock, that the TV might display the time at some time. Wrong. And Magnavox knows about this problem.
Im running this off a roof top analog antenna. In my area Cocoa Florida, it had between 9 and 11 analog channels depending on weather. the HDTV picks up over 64 channels both analog and HDTV. Despite sales pitches you do NOT need a HDTV specific antenna to get HDTV channels. For this price I would recommend a lightning protector just for the TV.
Great picture, sound may be a problem. Its too loud when switching channels despite the auto sound leveler. Youll be on the remotes volume control [that seems very slow to react] when switching channels all the time.

A problem with HDTV I suspect. poor signal and you lose the picture. and the thing can shut itself off without a signal after a few minutes. But it doesnt even look like its off. Just a dark grey screen. The screen you see with no signal. Might be related to this remote control problem. Actually I miss the reliability of my 16 yr old magnavox.
This remote control problem is unknown to Magnavox support.
Also only voice 1-800 support. Email and chat no longer exist online.
Setup claims it REQUIRES 2 people to set it up. Its VERY heavy. But 1 person CAN set it up, but 2 more hands and a strong back would have been nice.

Why did I give it 3 stars ? Ive owned it less than a month. And if this is as bad as it gets, then Id say go for it. It may just be a flash memory problem.

If all these problems can be fixed thru software, my rating could be higher than 3.
