...they lack the subtlety and neutrality I would prefer for music, but for presenting solid detail, a large soundstage, and being a fairly easy load to drive, these are excellent.
They are also quite attractive with the curved sides, which may not be as clearly visible in the pics.
I dont think I would pay nearly six hundred dollars for a pair like Amazon is selling them for, but for three hundred eighty shipped from audioadvisor dot com, I am quite happy with this purchase.
The break-in instructions are quite true: after leaving these speakers running for about 4 days continuously (an FM station) they really do blossom and open up. So dont judge them from their out-of-the-box performance, give em some time and youll be quite pleased!
Never heard of the "Athena" make before? Heres some background on the company I dug up online: "Athena Technologies is one of the three speaker brands owned by Audio Products International (API), the huge Canadian speaker manufacturer. The other brands are Mirage Speakers and Energy Speakers, two highly respected names in audio. Think of Athena as APIs "value" line. Because theyre sold in Best Buy and Future Shop retail outlets across North America, it isnt obvious that these speakers have an audiophile pedigree. Athena speakers, however, are meticulously designed and tested in state-of-the-art facilities, including a large anechoic chamber, at APIs headquarters in Toronto."
