This is my second Panasonic projector. The first one started turning blue after about a year and a half. This one, in addition to having the iris problem which others have already described, has turned yellow in the middle after 1000 hours. I am not a smoker and I clean the filter regularly. I will not buy another Panasonic projector until they can produce a product that doesnt fail after a year. On: 2009-06-02
I didnt buy this unit on amazon but i am having the same problem with the unit shutting down. i came on here to see if maybe i could buy a replacement bulb to fix the problem since in the upper left of my screen it says replace bulb. well now after reading reviews on here i guess a new bulb wont fix the problem. it saddens me to hear that for the chunk of cash (as little as it may be) still should last me more than the 2 years that i have had it. dont get me wrong i loved it when it worked it might not have had the best high def picture quality but who can complain when its your whole wall! again disappointed that i now have to search for a replacement unit... any suggestions? This is a great project when it works... I have had the same problems as many others. I have only 700 hours on this project and it will shutdown approx. 5 minutes after being on. At first it only happened once, however it now seems to happen twice when its first powered up. Hopefully, Panasonic will pony up and replace this defective project. I will update this once I find out. On: 2008-08-26
Ill chime in that mine, too, shuts off randomly and wont allow me to do anything useful with it. I thought it was a great thing to play Guitar Hero on, since there was no lag and it had a good picture, but 3 months later and it just shuts off for fun.
If someone could post a nice repair guide for it Id love to take a look. There is no way Im sending it to Kansas like the other guy who made a comment. On: 2008-07-15
I had purchased this projector12 months back and am facing a problem as briefed below and possible solutions tried but the problem is still not fixed.
1) The projector powers off after 30-60 seconds on starting and goes on stand by (yellow light). It then shows a red light of power off
2) The projector does not start after this with the remote
3) It has to be powered off from the mains and then restarted
4) Earlier, this used to happen once and now it behaves abnormally and sometimes it has to be restarted even upto 8 times or sometimes even just 2 times
5) After this, the projector does not shut down and movies can be watched for even as long as 8-10 hours
The projector was given to a service centre who did not find any problems in the hardware (power ballast, fans, bulb etc is ok). They have suggested that the PCB mainboard should be changed which costs as much as a new projector.

I am in the same boat as the others - bad iris. This product stinks and unfortunately I was taken.
Now I will have to be shipping it around at my expense.
This will be the last Panasonic product I buy. On: 2008-05-01
Dont Buy!!!! Sent in for repair more than once. Now that the warrantee has expired the projector is dead. Google for tons of other problems that other people have had. On: 2008-04-24
Same problem that everybody else is reporting. I had one for about 3 months and it started blanking, so I returned it for another. This one has worked for about 6 months and it is now doing the same thing.
Basically you turn it on, and within 5 minutes, the picture goes black. If you pull the plug and restart it, itll come up again. The problem seems to be getting worse, as for a while it would only require 1 restart, and now it has been requiring 2 or 3.
I did notice the 2nd ones test pattern is now yellow and blue, instead of white and black, which is apparently because of color streaks which would be all too visible on the original test pattern.
This seems pretty dirty of Panasonic. On the plus side, the image is fantastic when it works. On: 2008-03-29
Like other users, I am experiencing the same problem that the projector shuts itself down after moments of use.
My projector has been running for 1300 hrs. I just bought a new lamp thinking that it might be the lamp but nada. It does the same thing.
I will be sending this back to Panasonic. I think that I bought this less than a year ago. I will update on what happened to it. On: 2008-03-16
Great projector, no image issues. Very configurable, and the zoom allows for many different distance placements.
However...at 13 months, it turns off after 5 min, and needs to be reset (unplugged and plugged back in again) to continue using.
I hope my Amex buyers assurance kicks in for an extended warranty, otherwise I will be extremely mad and will not buy another Pannasonic product. On: 2008-03-16
Highly recommended for color, clarity, flexibility, and ease of use.
Panasonic has extended the warranty on this model by 6 months (total of 1.5 years). Also, the PT-AX200U solves the iris problem if you want to buy that unit without the warranty hassle. On: 2008-02-10
Ive had the Panasonic for over a year now and I have 1,100 hours on the Lamp. Its only turned itself off once that I know of in the last year and I didnt think anything about it at the time. This week it started flickering occasionally like it was switching between normal power and eco-power which is really annoying. I have a high-end power conditioner so I dot think electricity is the issue.
Picture quality is terrific and blows away everyone who sees it on a 100" screen in my media room. Ill keep my fingers crossed that nothing else goes wrong, I bought one of the very first pt-ax100us on the market. On: 2008-01-18
Read the other reviews. The iris in this thing is bad and Panasonic is ignoring that this is a defective product. They should have all been recalled.

My PT-AX100Us iris broke after 10 months of use. 8 months after the iris was replaced, the new iris broke again. Since so many people reported this problem, Panasonic must recall this projector. On: 2007-12-20

Some of the reviewers below, after having rated this projector 5 stars, have re-written their reviews, but Amazon wont let them change the star rating. So read the reviews, not just the star ratings.
For the record, the image on this projector is great. But you are almost guaranteed to end up with two problems after a few hundred hours of use. These problems are well-documented on the internet, and you should browse online forums to see just how ubiquitous these issues are.
The biggest problem is the defective iris. Usually starting between 400-700 hrs of use, the projector will turn itself off after a few minutes of use. After waiting a few more minutes, you can restart the projector and it will work, but after the next 20 or so hours of use, the projector will keep powering itself down and will not stay on. You will have to send it in to Panasonic.
The second problem is the color uniformity issue. On most models, you will start to see blue or red streaks across the edges of the screen. This is most noticeable during the white test screen, but if you watch black & white movies, as I do, you will not be able to avoid seeing the discoloration. When youre forced to send the projector to Panasonic because of the iris issue, they will "fix" the color uniformity problem by changing the test screen from white to blue, so that you can no longer see the blue streaks--when viewing the test screen!
I would be willing to give Panasonic the benefit of the doubt if their customer service wasnt so bad. (I should mention that if you do buy this projector, get a good extended warranty, as the problem may occur after initial warranty runs out, though it happened to me within 4 months of purchasing it). Although this problem is bound to happen with nearly every AX100u that they put out, they will feign ignorance on the phone and try to get out of helping you. They will give you a "case number" and promise to call you back within 48 hours. They will not call you back within 48 hours. You will call them back and they will avoid you. After you threaten to write a negative review on Amazon, they will relucantly allow you to send in your projector, which will cost you 50-100 dollars to ship. You will get your projector back within 7-30 days. Worst of all, its starting to become clear that after another 400-700 hours of use, the problem will reoccur. On: 2007-10-10
Excellent projector... when working. At 500 hours I had the infamous "IRIS" problem. After 2-3 min the projector would shut down. It is now at Heartland in Kansas for warranty repair. Despite this inconvenience, for the price, the performance is superb.
Like: high light output (can watch during day, windows open using "DYNAMIC" mode), superb picture on 120" screen - almost looks like 1080p to my eyes, flexible placement options with lens shift & lots of zoom, nice remote, quiet, accepts 1080p signal (but displays at 720p), also accepts 1080/24 signal from PS3 for smooth film-like playback.
Dislike: reliability (Iris issue), air filter not too easy to access when projector is ceiling mounted (minor issue)

All these days DLP projectors are leading the market, now new are is LCD projector. Panasonic have very good LCD projectors. I own Panasonic PTAX100U projector, which is a LCD Projector and its amazing. This projector offers highest brightness (2000 lumens) and higher contrast ration (6000:1). This projector supports 1080i, 1080P, 720P and all other resolutions.
You have to look the brightness and contrast ratio features of the projector prior to purchase. Higher lumens allows to watch the movie without making the room complete dark.I mean, still you can watch the movie in room light. Higher contrast ratio allows to project darker scenes effectively.
I brought this projector and prior to setup the screen,I projected the image on wall. Its an awesome. I mean, this projector also project the image very well on the wall. The color and resolution are brilliant and excellent.
This projector brings the movie theatre to your home, you will get complete feeling that you are watching the movie at home. I have 150" screen and movie on this screen is just amazing. This projector can project the image upto 200" image.

STAY AWAY. Great projector until it breaks. After 600-800 hours of lamp life, most users of this product will experience a stuck iris, resulting in the projector turning itself off, forcing you to turn it back on with decreased brightness. Panasonic will not recall the item, so it needs to be sent in for repair under warranty. This is a well documented issue on forums, so do some research. I am waiting on mine to be returned from Heartland (Panasonics repair site in Kansas). The projector performs beautifully when it works. Terrible reliability. On: 2007-09-25

Ive been using this for 100 hours. The picture is incredible. Just like someone said, its like a big LCD on the wall. This projector is also very flexible in terms of throw distance. I have a very small college dorm, AX100U gives me about 90" picture from only 9 away. Also, in the brightest mode, the picture is very good even with a lot of ambient light. On: 2007-09-21
I have had the Panasonic PT-AX100u for going on 4 months and I waited until now to give my review.
After researching many models and reading reviews, I decided upon the PT-AX100U. I cant believe how excellent this projector is.
Setup
I set it up on a wall shelf and projected it to a 8 electric screen. My living room is very light, with one entire wall is windows. The controls and adjustments are simple and allow for getting the picture just right. The remote is small, back lit and simple to use. You can even make custom settings if you like and easily access them.
Operation
I set this up with HDMI through my AV receiver. The image is nothing short of amazing. No screen door effect, no pixelization. The image is sharp and clean. HD is simply stunning. The unit has a setting that adjusts for the amount of ambient light, which makes viewing during the day not only possible, but well done. It is not as good as complete darkness, not by a long shot, but it looks good.
The AX100u has ability to accept and display a 1080p/24 signal. The AX100U will accept 1080p/24 as well as the more conventional 1080p/60. The 1080p/24 format is important because it will become a standard feature on many of the new high definition DVD players, HD-DVD and Blu-ray. I have an Oppo upconverting DVD player that looks *amazing*.
The sharpness of the picture, the brightness and the black levels are superlative. There are no complaints whatsoever about the picture.
Inputs are HDMI, component, VGA, serial and S-Video. I bought a 20 cable at monoprice for $25 that was 24 gauge, to compensate for the length and avoid signal loss (or so I was told). The fan is quiet and hard to hear at all. My throw distance is short for a projector about 11 feet, and yet the picture looks great, with no artifacts, pixels or the like.
This is an excellent projector, a great value and if you are looking for a versatile projector, this deserves serious consideration.
Some notes:
I sent the unit in for repair due so some damage to the pins in the HDMI port. During the projectors time in Kansas, the repair center informed me of an iris issue which they repaired, free of charge. On: 2007-09-21

Having used this projector for over 8 months it has been very reliable with excellent picture clarity, color and so on I used a calibrating program to get the settings more accurate. This is about a 45 minutes to one hour project as long as you dont get into the advanced settings.
Shutting Down Fix?
I started having a shutting down problem one day Id turn it on it would run a few minutes and then quit this happened a few times. I traced it to (this may not be all cases) that the power cord was not seated properly on the projector. It takes a bit of effort to get it to seat properly. Firmly push it on it should go on at least 1/2 or better. I found one other person who thought they had a defective projector and it was the same problem. On: 2007-09-12
Having seen many projectors over the years, I was dubious about the claims made about this one. I was particularly unsure about the claim that you could use it in the middle of the day with drapes open.
Indeed, its all true.
With just the standard settings, and in "Vivid Cinema" mode, this projector has the most brilliant colors and the brightest, clearest picture of any projector I have ever seen - yes, even during the day with the drapes open.
A bright light source shining directly on the screen will of course tend to white out the image, as it raises the black levels. However, diffuse light (e.g. reflected through a window) does not impact the picture that much.
I use a media PC computer as my DVD player. Individual pixels cannot be seen unless you are literally an inch from the screen, and even then are hard to see. Colors are bright and vivid, almost jumping out of the picture.
I dont find the light harmonizer feature very disruptive as some users have - in fact, I think it is a big benefit to making the projector work in many varied light situations.

Knowing that the ax100 is a top rated projector, I purchased one. On the second night of use, it powered down and would no longer turn on for more than a few minutes. After a bit of research, I learned that this is a problem that many, many users have experienced - probably an iris problem. Do a search and youll find a lot of information regarding this problem. A friend who has had this projector for a year is now experiencing the same problem. It is difficult to get a refund on a defective projector, so if youre going to buy this unit (I wouldnt), then buy from a retailer with a liberal return policy. On: 2007-08-03
THE UNIT WENT WELL BEYOND MY EXPECTATIONS.
PICTURE QUALITY IS GREAT, EASE OF USE, WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND. On: 2007-06-28
Ive put about 200 hours on my new AX100U so far. If youre looking for a "do-everything" home theater projector, youll find that the Panasonic AX100U is a perfect solution. As a Home Theater professional, Ive owned and installed quite a few home theater projectors over the last few years (Optoma, Infocus, Sharp, BenQ, Mitsubishi, Sony, AskProxima, etc.) but the AX100U is definitely the best all-around solution (and I chose it over the 1080p Panasonic, Optoma and Sony models). Heres why:
1. Gorgeous picture (color saturation and contrast provide nearly a 3D image)
2. Brightest home theater projector on the market (Its mounted in my living room across from a 120-inch diagonal electric screen mounted in front of my fireplace). Lots of ambient light enters this room and the picture is still VERY watchable.
3. Its 720p resolution and "smooth screen" technology means NO pixels can be seen from just 12-inches away from the screen.
4. Absolutely no screen-door (no rainbows since its an LCD display)
5. Lots of lens shift adjustment makes it easy to install and fill your screen perfectly.
Heres a list of my viewing sources that are connected to the AX100U:
1. Computer
2. DVD player
3. Satellite dish
4. Playstation 2
5. HDTV outdoor antenna
The 1080p projectors appear slightly sharper if youre sitting within 6 feet of the screen. However, if you sit 6 feet away or more, they look identical). The 1080p projectors currently on the market cant handle ANY LIGHT AT ALL (you MUST have a completely dark room). Regardless of the source or the amount of ambient light in the room, the Panasonic AX100U will give you a stellar picture thats BRIGHT, vivid and life-like (even when watching Sunday afternoon football with the drapes open). Who could ask for more?
Buy it - youll wont be sorry.

Excellent project with enough brightness in the room with window. All functions are working well as described by Panasonic. Lighting remote control is helpful in dark room. It is definitely worth $$$$ you paid for this project. On: 2007-04-05
I have only just received this unit, but my first impression are that it is amazing! I dont have everything set up yet in the room, so I just tested it by putting the image on the back wall (which is unfortunately a cream color and is textured) while having my LCD tv sitting in its normal spot. I hooked up my PS3 to it and turned on a couple blu-ray movies. My wife was watching tv and looked back at the projection and was absolutely amazed that the image on the wall looked brighter and clearer than the blu-ray movies my LCD tv, and shes not one notice differences all that much!
Set up is a breeze and I love the big buttons on the remote that switch the color and brightness modes.(buttons are "Home theater" "Living room" and "favorite") Also, the ability to physically move the lens and zoom are extremely nice and offer a great amount of flexibility for any size room.
Ill be sure to update the review after Ive done more extensive testing on different kinds of inputs, and on a true screen instead of the wall. On: 2007-03-13
If you decide to purchase the AX100U, number one on your agenda should be to make sure you have a late model DVD player with Up Conversion capabilities. This is usually signified by a HDMI jack on the rear panel. Then you will be able to enjoy the full capabilities of your new Video Projector.
The Panasonic AX100U is absolute perfection which truly sums up this masterpiece of video technology.
It is difficult to see how Blu-ray or HD can improve on the superb picture quality from standard DVDs when viewed on this elegant machine.
Even in ambient light during the day, the AX100U delivers outstanding color and detail.
Even standard TV fare comes alive once you familiarize yourself with the multitude of settings available from the well laid out menu. Satellite and digital cable also display with pleasing results.
The sleek lighted remote is handy and adequate for all your requirements.
In my opinion, no dedicated LCD, Plasma, or DLP Television set can come close to delivering the kind of picture that makes every viewing on the AX100U the equivalent of a World Premiere.

This is my second projector - I used an NEC for the last four years, but that died on me recently. And, boy, am I glad it died - I am amazed by the quality of the AX100U - the pictures and colors almost jump off the screen at you. Also, the oft mentioned LDC projector screen door effect is virtually non-existant - you have to stand almost next to the screen to notice it. I believe Panny used some smoothening technology to achieve it. The contrast is also truely outstanding for an LCD projector - at par with DLP systesm, but without the headaches of the rainbow effect.
Couple of pointers which might be helpful to other users. When I first started using the projector with my DVD player I was getting some wavy curls (not too visible, but still there) that seemed to flow across the screeen. However, after about 4-5 hours of use, they have disappeared - so if any of you see those wavy curls, just give it a few hours and hopefully yours will disappear as well.
Secondly, unlike my old NEC I was getting a flickering shimmer when using my HD box from my cable company. The shimmer was just at the edge of teh picture. There is an easy fix for this. Go to options, overscan, and you can actually crop the edge of the image and not see it any more...voila - no flickers and an incredible picture.
Be aware that this is big, bulky projector compared to some others out there. Definately not a portable one - you dont want to be lugging it home from work after presentations to see home pictures. This was designed as a dedicated home theater projector, not a portable presentation device.
I highly recommend this projector - youve got to see the picture to believe it - I didnt think it was possible at this price range.

First off, this is only a good, but not great, projector. With the way projector prices have been falling, there are other options for less that deliver comparable performance. The Sanyo Z5, for example, costs several hundred dollars less and actually produces a sharper picture as well as including twice as many digital inputs as the Panasonic. I bought this model last September and have already had to send it in twice to get fixed. In fact, its on its way to the repair center as I am typing this review. This is not an isolated incident either, MANY PT-AX100 owners have been experiencing problems just like mine and its clear that Panasonic didnt spend enough time/money on quality control. Go read through any HDTV or projector forum for a laundry list of issues regarding this projector. The decision is up to you, but I would advise people to look elsewhere if they want to avoid a potential headache. On: 2007-01-29
First, let me say, I would have given this projector 4.5 stars if the rating was available. Basically, its a really good projector. It has everything you need, and the picture quality and brightness is really good.
However, this unit is really big and not just a little ugly. I mean, I suppose the picture quality is the primary objective, but couldnt they have made it just a little prettier?
It doesnt actually look that much worse than other units in shape, etc. But its huge, which makes the utilitarian appearance stand out. Also, its white. Which means that if you want to use it as part of a home theater setup like me, its more visible in a dark room.
Ugly and more visible make a bad combination.
Im really happy with my projector. Im sure Ill get a lot of use and satisfaction from it. But the first thing that goes through my mind everytime I look at it is: "Wow! Thats a big, ugly projector!" On: 2007-01-02
I managed to get a PS3 and knew I needed a new HD projector to properly represent the Blu-ray movies and next-gen games. After searching for months over the net I finally found tons of good reviews on the PT AX100U and decided to go for it. Even though its native resolution is 720p, its HDMI input accepts 1080p/60 even 1080p/24! plus it handles all the resolutions below. Boy was I impressed! The jump in quality of even the SD TV image was immediately noticable! It does a good job of upscaling my current SD satellite line up. The PS3 sets itself to 1080p when connected to this projector and the picture looks excellant. The Blu-ray movies are very clean and sharp! The brightness is finally good enough to still watch programs with the curtains a bit open and a decent amount of light coming through. It looks like a massive LCD or Plasma screen. The colors and contrast are very good as well. I am very happy with this purchase and so are all my friends and guests who come over and are shocked by the clarity and brightness! Lets hope it works well for a long time to come. On: 2006-12-23
Everyone that sees the picture this projector gives wants one. Youd expect to pay much more for this quality. The picture still looks great with the lights on and blinds open. Given the adjustability of the projector and the abilty to handle ambient light, this will work in a lot of homes other projectors might not be right for. And it looks great even on an inexpensive screen (Da-Lite HD Model B).
The only negative thing is I know about right now is that with all projectors including the new dlp rear projector tvs is that the bulb has to be replaced every 2000 or so hours and they cost over $300 to replace. I just got my projector, so I dont know if the bulb will last its advertised lenght.
Id be surprised if you werent wowed by this projector.
UPDATE:
I have had problems with this projector. Already on my second one and am getting ready to send it away for more work.
Seems to be a reliability problem. The projector shuts off automatically after I turn it on..forcing me to wait 5 minutes to turn it back on. Also, and much worse, the projected image is starting to go blank every 5 minutes and the imput options appear..very annoying and you may miss key parts of whatewver you are watching.
Now, still under warranty, Panasonic is making me pay to ship the unit to Kansas(Im in California) where they will work on it and say they will have it back to me in 7-10 days.
If you still want to buy this after reading this, make sure you get a good warranty.
My rating now would be much lower than 5 stars if Amazon would let me change it(they wont)

Second Update: Well my Iris has broken again! And now it is out of warranty! This is the third time I have had to return this product for repair! I think there should be a class action suit against these guys for not recalling a product that almost everyone is reporting problems with...will never buy a Panasonic product again. On: 2006-12-14
I just got this from amazon, and it has an AMAZING short throw. I have it on a 106" screen from about 12 and it looks great. Its like having a 106" plasma on 16:9 Hi-Def channels. Also, if you order on before December 31st you can go to Panasonics website and print a mail in rebate for $200 and a $300 Blockbuster gift card. On: 2006-12-12
Did a ton of research before buying. Could not find all the features I wanted, so I waited. (Went from 52" RCA rear projection tv to 92" projector.) Glad I did, this unit does a great job in a room with ambient light. I recommend getting a light gray screen rather than white or just using the wall for improved contrast. Excellent quality, quiet, great picture. Remember, the screen is only half the experience, dont skimp on sound!
