Eton FR400 Hand Crank Radio and Power Generator (Black)

More Information

Much of the specifications are exaggeration from the truth     On: 2008-06-29

If the manufacturer didnt lie in the product specification, I would give the radio a 3-star.

As oppose to the manufacturers specification, this radio:
1) is NOT water proof. This becomes pretty apparent, once you hold a unit in your own hands;
2) does NOT include any cell phone charger connector;
3) does NOT have a really sturdy build. This becomes pretty apparent, once you hold a unit in your own hands.

Also, the FM radio receiver is very crappy. I frankly dont understand why the manufacturer didnt bother to install a decent FM radio receiver, which shouldnt be too much to ask in these days.

Does what it's supposed to do!     On: 2008-06-28

Pretty cool that you can just crank it up and itll work. I bought this radio mainly for emergency use when electricity goes out.
I do wish it felt a bit better built but otherwise does what its supposed to do.
A Must Have For All Families     On: 2008-06-19

This is really an invaluable life-saving tool. Every family should have one of these around the house regardless of whether or not you go camping.

Highlights
Multiple power sources with standard battery, rechargeable battery, AC outlet, crank.
LED Light-it isnt super bright, but it will get the job done in case your lights go out or you are fumbling for bug spray in the tent.
Siren-It is pretty loud, and will certainly garner the attention of onlookers in case you are in trouble.
It also comes with a coupon which you mail in to get an adapter to run your cell phone in case the battery dies. Once again great for home or camping.
Offers direct communication with the weather channels so there is no fumbling with the tunning dial.

This radio does what it should     On: 2008-06-17

I purchased this radio after several severe storms left us with no power and no idea of what was going on. This radio has already seen my family through several tornado near misses. We have no basement and the alarm on this radio lets us know, even in the middle of the night, when we need to take cover. While it is a bit annoying to have the "weather alert" alarm go off for every alert in the central Illinois area (many of them do not apply to us) it is far preferrable to the alternative. The NOAA weather stations come in crystal clear. The hand crank does require quite a bit of cranking to power the radio for 1/2 an hour, but it is a great alternative to always having batteries on hand.
Excellent Radio     On: 2008-06-13

Good quality electronics. Great reception, for the size very good quality sound. Weather channels and alerts work very well. Very timely for us as we have been getting pounded with severe thunderstorms and tornadoes. We have experienced several power outages and the radio came in handy.

Only minor complaint is that the cell phone charging takes a very long time for a significant charge. This feature is for when you REALLY want to make a call.
Has just about everything     On: 2008-06-11

I love this emergency radio. It has just about everything you might need during a power outage. I use the FM radio regularly, and keep it handy for tornado warnings. Since it comes in fun colors it makes a nice gift: an emergency radio sounds a bit dull, but a cute pink one is a radio of a different color.
Not as described     On: 2008-05-23

The product description clearly says, "Includes an emergency siren, and a built-in cell phone charger with multiple adapter tips". After reading many accounts of how it is possible to lose contact simply because of not being able to recharge a cell phone, I thought this a very good feature in a "disaster radio", and it is the feature that motivated me to purchase the radio.

I was surprised to find that the radio not only doesnt include "multiple adapter tips", it doesnt have even one, in fact doesnt have even a cord that will plug into the socket labeled "cell phone", and this socket is also nothing like any standard cell phone cord would plug into.

I contacted Eton customer service. To their credit, the reply was quick, but to the effect of, "tell us the cell phone model and we will send one cord, but no other adapters".

Im less than thrilled with this radio. It seems OK, but the light is dim (2 LEDs), the radio reception is spotty, hard to tune, and the carrying case is too small to fit the radio and the charger.
TV reception goes away in Feb 2009     On: 2008-05-19

While I cant comment on this units performance as an FM/AM/Weather Radio, you should note that after the transition to Digital TV signals in February 2009, the TV bands on this radio will no longer work.

Just something to keep in mind before you buy...
Exceptional!     On: 2008-04-08

I compared this radio with many others, and decided to go with this one. My decision was on mark, it is without question the "best" radio I have owned, and Ive owned plenty of radios over the years! The standard AM/FM and TV stations are exceptional... I live 65 miles from the stations and they come in crystal clear with great volume and no static. The weather channel is crystal clear and good volume. I love the option of using the rechargeable batteries that come with it (or using regular batteries) or, and I love this, the crank... just a few turns of the crank and you have a flashlight, emergency flashing lights, siren, and all the radio stations! What is better than that?
Good portable weather radio for the money     On: 2008-04-03

Pros:

Battery operated.

Can use hand crank if battery fails

Also is a conventional radio

Has a built-in flash light.

Will charge your cell phone. Card enclosed to receive the correct adapter.

CON: It odes not have the ability to limit warnings to a specific county like the some of the Midland units. The warning alarm in the middle of the night for areas not close-by can be a real nuisance.
Pink!     On: 2008-03-28

Thirty bucks shipped? Sold. It does exactly what they said it would. We have a fair amount of power outages due to older large trees in our neighborhood.
Emergency radio     On: 2008-03-28

I have not use it yet, but is a great comfort to have it at hand
Lousy radio     On: 2008-03-26

I got this Radio and tried it for a few days just to reveal that its working only on AM in good clarity. FM was noisy and a lot of static no matter how I pointed the antenna. The TV stations hardly picked up and when it did it was only standing close to a window. The rest of the features i.e the flashlight and other non-radio worked fine. I could not bring it to the Weather mode even though we had a few very stormy days in the area. The radio remained silent with no alert.

All in all its not a bargain and its not worth the price, not even after the discount. The only good thing in this radio - assuming it would have worked properly - is the cranking of the battery in case youre running out of electricity and batteries.
Basically works as advertised     On: 2008-03-26

This radio basically works as advertised. The description said there was a fine tuning control embedded in the tuning knob but I havent seen it. I cant get any TV audio but then over the air TV is difficult to get where I live in any case. I am able to tune in the AM and FM stations that I listen to, which are not particularly strong signals and are a bit tricky to get on my other radios so its good enough. When you charge the battery by cranking for 90 seconds the charge doesnt seem to last for a particularly long time.
weather radio     On: 2008-03-25

It sounds good but I havent tested it yet to see if I have set it right. I leave it on on and it didnt come on when we had 10 in of snow. I guess it only works for tornado weather.
So cute!     On: 2008-03-25

I love my little pink Eton. I initially got it simply because this radio was on my wish list but I justify the purchase. When it went on Gold Box Special I was less than thrilled with the color on the screen but got it anyway.
Sooo glad I did. Love the radio. Really love the color.
Works great!     On: 2008-03-23

No complaints. Works as it says it does. Would not consider the unit rugged, but adequately made.
Nice little alert radio     On: 2008-03-23

This radio exceeded my expectations. It has everything I need for an emergency weather alert and the company sent the correct cell phone charger as soon as I registered the radio.I didnt find anything wrong with the material. Its just a hard plastic that you typically find on these products. Great Buy!
Good Radio     On: 2008-03-22

This unit provides exactly what I wanted in case of an emergency. When the power goes out, it provides communication with the outside world so that we can learn what is going on. The weather alert went off the second day I had it due to a flood warning. There are many more expensive units available, and cheaper ones, also, but this is just what someone needs to see them through a short time of emergency.
Sound is very disappointing     On: 2008-03-20

The sound quality is very disappointing, worse for me than dollar store radios. Between the speaker and the tuner it doesnt seem to be possible to catch any station without significant static or distortion. As an emergency radio, without any other options, it would probably suffice, but it will be just that, a device I use as a radio only as a last resort.

Ill actually find the siren, the led flashlight, and the red led strobe to be the most useful of the items, as long as the dynamo and rechargeable battery pack continue to provide the juice.

FYI, the manual states that 10-15 minutes of cranking may provide enough cell phone charge for one minute of talk time, depending on phone capability. That should do in an emergency, otherwise be ready to crank for a while to get some more bars on your battery.
Doesn't work     On: 2008-03-05

I really wanted this radio. I like the looks of it, but I had a couple problems with it. At first it wouldnt charge. I could use the batteries and pick up a weather channel. Eton sent me a new rechargeable battery, and it didnt work either. Then I realized that the connector was loose. Then the charge held, but now I couldnt pick up a weather channel. Not even static. The radio looked good, customer service was great, but the radio was not. Im afraid to buy another.
A gadget you can love...     On: 2008-02-23

I love this thing. I got it on sale when Amazon offered it at significant discount. Its brothers and sisters in other colors were 30 dollars more expensive. I guarantee you that if I ever need an emergency radio I am not going to care one damned bit that it is pink. In fact, I confess, it is kind of cute in hot pink. But on to its functional delights:

This radio will handcrank power to the radio and to your cell phone. The radio comes with a coupon so that you can get an attachment to hook up and power your specific cell phone. The radio has FM, AM, TV channels and weather. Besides the handcrank it can be powered with batteries or a wall plug in. The wall plug in attachment is included.

It also serves as a flashlight. It has a carrying case. This thing is so cute and functional that I can almost imagine that someone crossed an iPod with a standard emergency radio and came up with this. Great deal for 29 bucks as a Gold Box special.
TV Audio is dead Feb 2009     On: 2008-02-22

These are good radios, this is my second. But be warned when the US goes DTV right after the Superbowl Febuary 17, 2009 the TV audio feature is dead. The FCC is already in the process of auctioning the frequencies off.
Eton FR400 Hand Crank Radio     On: 2008-02-08

The Eton FR400 Hand Crank Radio arrived in very good condition. I was very pleased with the whole transaction. The box was in excellent condition, as was the radio. I was very pleased with it. I would recommend the radio to all of my friends.
Charge doesn't last, and adapter doesn't fit - DISAPPOINTMENT!!!!!     On: 2008-02-05

I was really excited about this Eton hand crank radio. However, I soon realized several problems:

#1-It says to crank it at the speed of two revolutions per second for 90 seconds, and the charge should last 30 minutes. Actually, the charge only lasts 10 minutes.

#2-The cellphone adapter that the company sent me fits into my cellphone, but does not fit into the radio! This renders it totally useless as a cellphone charger.

#3-FM channels get all staticky once you set the radio down. It seems that if youre holding the radio, your body acts as an antenna but once you go away from it, it instantly gets all this static.

To sum it all up, let me just say this -- great idea, peeps, but poor execution.
Free from cords, at last!     On: 2008-01-25

Love the light-weight and compactness of this emergency radio in addition to the multiple energy sources.
Tried it out on a recent camping trip and couldnt locate TV stations, seemed to get radio on TV setting. In subsequent test at home, I got all our local TV stations, plus some unidentified broadcasts which sounded like radio.
NOAA weather broadcast was very helpful on campout.
The cover is a good idea, but it fits too tightly to be used easily.
Eton FR400 Hand Crank Radio and Power Generator (Red)
Exact same review as for the 200 model, but more compact ...     On: 2007-12-27

and ... it has "nice lines," has a smaller footprint in Emergency Kit, great for the car where space is a premium.
It's the Little Things That Raises Questions     On: 2007-12-25

Its the little things that define the quality of a product. Having just received the Eton FR400 I cant attest to how well it will work under emergency conditions -- which is, after all, why one buys something like this. But theres a few little things that make me nervous about its quality and design.

The plastic strikes me as cheap. How will it stand up to getting knocked around?

The case is a textbook case of poor design. It fits the radio so tightly that it turns on switches when you insert the radio -- if you can get the radio into the case. Plus theres no room for the AC charger. This may sound peevish, but its this kind of poor craftmanship which can be symbolic of a short sighted company. What good is a case if its a pain to use? What good is it if it turns on features that drain the battery? What good is it if you cant carry accessories that comes with the radio?

And the key question, how good is a company that puts out a product so poorly designed? Was Eton trying to cut corners? If so, where else did they scrimp? Did anyone test the case before manufacturing it? If so, what kind of standards do they have?

Bottom line: the device has all the features listed here, but their execution makes me wonder if it was worth getting.
Clear and Crisp     On: 2007-12-08

This radio is a quality product. It tunes in stations easily. The sound is clear and crisp. Buttons, knobs, and switches are easy to use. The plus is that can generate power by itself. Aside from rechargeable batteries for emergencies, it uses three AA batteries for daily use.
Info on Digital for this item...     On: 2007-11-16

I needed more info on this radio and others so I called Amazon tech support. I was given the Eton customer service number: 1-800-872-2228.

The Eton FR400 has TV capabilities that will become obsolete in 2009 as the signals will all be switched to digital for the TV portion of this radio. All other functions will work. The updated model, Eton FR405, is the same as this radio only without the TV signal capability. The FR405 is only available at Best Buy at this time. For my money, the FR400 with TV capabilities, while the TV signals last, is a better buy.

This radio is water resistant. A waterproof model would be perfect. Weve lost a couple of cell phones in the river and water kills them fast. Sun dried cell phones are never the same if they even flicker with life at all. So, now I look for waterproof when buying anything that might get wet or fall overboard. An emergency radio is in that class.

Another newer model coming on the scene soon will be the Eton FR1000--no TV capability, but it will come with a walkie talkie. This is being tested now and should be the next model you will see on the market.

Eton does not make a GPS system combined with NOAA radio capabilities. They also do not have a unit with both shortwave and NOAA combined--apparently the circuitry on the two things are not compatable. No one has this.

I want something that will be equally useful on land, at sea or in a vehicle. I want an "emergency" unit that packages many of the things I may need for "survival" communication. Okay, I really meant everything I might need. :) I havent found the perfect NOAA radio yet.

The other thing that is not available is an NOAA radio with digital TV. Apparently, the digital components are too expensive at this time to add this feature to these radios and maintain a decent price point. So, companies are simply deleting TV from the mix.

This model, Eton FR400, will charge a cell phone battery. None of the connections come with the unit. You send in for them. The first cell phone adapter connector is free, additional ones cost $5 each. Eton tries to keep a number of cell phone battery charger adaptors in stock, but you may want to see if they have your specific adaptor before making a purchase because they dont carry them all.

Amazon has inflated the retail price on this unit. It sells for $60 directly from Eton, plus $10 shipping.

The unit is larger than I expected. This is okay, but wouldnt a cell phone sized unit be wonderful! Waterproof of course.

Excellent emergency Radio     On: 2007-11-13

This is an excellent radio with good sound quality for both talk and music. It is sturdy and well built. It comes with a convenient carry case which holds the instructions and batteries which is very useful in the case of an emergency. Sound is clearest after a full charge using the built in re-chargable battery and also clear using AA batteries. The least clear sound is produced when all other power supply is exhausted and you need to use the crank. However, this radio has a lot to run on before you get to the crank stage.

The company was very prompt in supplying the cell phone adapter, however they have sent two and neither of them fit the phone so in an emergency we will not be able to charge the phone until we get this aspect straigntened out. this is the reason for 4 rather than 5stars

Every home should have this radio for both emergency and ordinary portable use.

GOOD QUALITY     On: 2007-10-17

Product is very good quality and durable. Reception is good and seems to last for quite a while with only a little bit of cranking.
Eton FR400     On: 2007-10-17

The FR400 is a good, though pricey, radio. The LED flashlight is intense (you wont want to look directly at it), but not so bright. This is the case for most LED flashlights, so, if you need to be active during a low light condition, you might be better off with an ordinary flashlight. I have two gripes:

1) It doesnt stand well on its end. During a recent power outage, I tried pointing the light upward, as I did with my other flashlights, so that it would reflect off the ceiling and illuminate a larger area. The dynamo crank prevents the radio from standing well on its end.

2) The AC adapter doesnt fit in the bag, as another reviewer already noted. The bag, by the way, fits rather tightly, so it is easy to accidentally turn knobs and flip switches as youre pushing the radio in.

Works great     On: 2007-10-10

I bought this product based on a friends recommendation. I have been very impressed with the features and functionality of the FR-400. The quality of the unit is nice and I have already had the benefit of the "alert" function.
Cool looking radio - poor reception     On: 2007-10-03

This radio could not even tune in stations , both AM & FM, that I can get on a walkman thats years old. I bought a Sony ICF-SW/7600GR. I works extremely well, is compact, though it doesnt have a crank and is more expensive. I got it for $61 on an auction site.
Good Radio!
by: Anonymous    On: 2007-09-27

This handy little radio has plenty going for it. Every family should have one in case of emergencies, which as we know, can happen anytime or anywhere. What I really like about it is the fact that in addition to AM/FM stations and Weather broadcasts -- it picks up the audio from our local TV stations. This can be great because they are the ones that will be broadcasting news and weather as it happens. One added benefit that I didnt realize was also included is a great carrying case with shoulder strap. You cant go wrong for the money on this one.
Great Sound, Great Looks, Great Product!     On: 2007-08-29

The inexpensive Eton FR400 is a nice little radio as well as a potential lifesaver. For its size it has a surprisingly good balanced tone (not adjustable), and very clear reception on NOAA, AM, FM, and TV bands alike. The power crank/dynamo doubles as an exercise machine...not the easiest thing to crank (especially if you follow the recommendation to crank at 2 revolutions per second for 90 seconds to acheive maximum power charge), but you get up to an hour and a half to rest up before you need to recharge. I wish the case had a compartment for the power and cell phone adapters though, to keep all parts in one place. I gave mine to my electronically picky and critical sattelite-TV field manager brother-in-law (to keep at his home in the US Virgin Islands for hurricane use), and immediately bought another for our own tornado, thunderstorm, icestorm and power vagary usage here in beautiful rural West Michigan. Ill take it camping and its light weight and weather resistant design may even cause it to join me in my treestands this deer season (I wish an earphone was included as well, but as I seem to be the last living man without an iPod I cant blame Eton for my not having my own headphones, I suppose...). By the way, the available metallic colors offered on these are "way cool"! You wont regret buying the FR400, regardless of the weather in your part of the world. BTW: after sending in the registration info I received cell phone power charger adapters for two (2) different phones within 10 days time. Murphys law being immutable, our cell plan replaced our phones with a new model in the interim. One call to the eton toll-free customer service line sent another adapter out the same day to accomodate our upgrade...free of charge!
Nice, warning feature not usefull     On: 2007-08-22

Nice radio and weather settings. The radio has does not tune to any UHF channels so thats a loss but good reception and sound, nice for what it is. The weather warning function is not real useful since it goes off for a 5 county area and 90% of the time there is no reason for it to wake me at 2 in the morning. This is not he radios fault but more NOAAs so cant blame eton for it.

Exactly as advertised.     On: 2007-08-21

In these uncertain times I have felt a need for an emergency radio, and this fits the bill quite well.
Mid-range quality. Good for occasional use rather than constant use.     On: 2007-08-20

Everything worked out of the box. Construction is plastic, rather than metal, so long term durability may be an issue especially if it is used daily. Nice rubber sealed battery door to keep moisture out, but Id still avoid getting it wet. Ive experimented with the crank charger which worked fine, but havent really put it to a tough real world test yet.

It has a nice little battery pack that is included & you can also insert three AA NiMh batteries of your own. The tight fitting fabric case has a shoulder strap, but no room in the bag for the AC charger.

It didnt include an adapter for my Motorola Razr cell phone, but when I called Eton, they sent one for free.

I only use it occasionally during emergencies. Not sure if its durable enough for constant everyday use. If your looking for something for constant use, get ready to spend a lot more money for a radio.

A little pricey but came with all of the features I wanted. Easy to use, durable construction. Dont forget to contact the company for a cell phone charger as it is not included in the box, you have to order it with a postcard found in the box or by email.
Who knows?     On: 2007-08-02

Since I did not receive either a direction manual or a warrenty I am very dissatisfied.
FR400 Emergency Radio     On: 2007-07-14

The radio has one very annoying feature. When set to receive NOAA Weather alerts it will receive them but then continue playing NOAA weather reports for a wide area. When I purchased this radio I did not know about SAME technology which limits the alerts to a much smaller area in your vacinity. If you live in an area with a lot of alerts as I do in Florida then getting a radio with SAME technology will keep you from being unnecessarily awakened in the night. Go to the NOAA web site for a description of SAME. All other functions of the radio seem to work as advertised.
Little powerhouse     On: 2007-07-07

Since we havent yet had a real emergency, I cant speak to its use in that capacity, but this little box of energy does everything it claims to do. Use the hand crank, and the flashlight and radio work beautifully. In fact, the sound from the radio is clear and loud. I have other Eton products, and they are small compact wonders, in my opinion. You really dont need an emergency to enjoy them, but think how useful they will be when one occurs.
Good Radio     On: 2007-06-29

I had this radio for a month and so far had excellent experience with it. They are taking their time sending me that Cell Phone charger though. I am not sure if they will ever send it but I will try to get a hold of them soon.
Surprised at how happy I am, especially after several negative reviews.
by: mrgus    On: 2007-05-27

This radio is reviewed on Amazon several times, but most are under the Red Cross versions listing, even though this is exactly the same radio. I read several negative reviews prior to buying this item. Well, as it turns out I think this is a nice little unit. I would describe the sound overall as good. Maybe Ill amend this review in the future, but Im happy with the features, design & performance.
Opening the battery cover and connecting the battery was just that simple, and it has remained securely closed. Maybe the design has been modified because that procedure has gotten a lot of negative feedback, but I cant see any reason there would be a problem. The cellphone charging cord & several connectors (lets be honest...were never going to use this) were included, and my Sanyo phone is covered.
This is a light, inexpensive case. The tuner seems fine. Here in NYC Ive had no trouble tuning in the various AM & FM stations that I like. This is not a high-end indestructable radio. I think this is a good, relatively solidly built & designed radio that can be used every day. I charged it over night with the included adapter. Its brought me a few ballgames over the past few days without needing a charge (Im just going to let it drain completely once to complete a battery cycle). I like this little radio very much.
broke down too fast
by: themondaygarden    On: 2007-05-11

radio features are good. however after only a few months the on-off switch no longer works properly and radio can now only be used on crank or battery -- not plug-in so Im not sure that the alert works.

Myself, I prefer products that are going to last several years with ordinary use.
Excellent Weather Radio. It works Great

After noting some less than satisfactory reviews by others on similar Eaton products , I decided to go ahead and buy this product. I found that the FR400 meets all my criteria in a weather radio. First, the crank system covers our communications need should we have an extended power outage. This past week, over 100,000 people were without power in our area. The crank generating system works excellent. It actually works easier than I thought that it would. I also find the Alert function very important. You simple turn a Selector Knob to Alert, and when the National Weather Service issues an alert, the radio comes on automatically. This alert gives you advance warning of dangerous weather, and can save your life in case a tornado is about to happen near you.It also warns you of other bad weather conditions such as extreme straight line winds and hail. Flood Warnings are also covered in these alerts.

Yes we have tornado sirens for impending tornados. Since we have satellite TV reception, we usually lose our TV signal just as the bad storms get close to us. With the FR400, we easily can slide the selection bar and tune in any of several TV stations, and pick up the sound portion of the broadcast. We can also access our local FM and AM radio channels. The reception is excellent on both AM and FM bands. I have mine set to Channel ll the CBS TV affiliate in Dallas/Fort Worth. The tuning bar reads TV2. Channel 5, a lower number would be set on TV1. We consider this product an excellent value, and recommend this model due to the included AC Adapter. The included cell phone adapters fit both my wifes cell phone and my own. Hers is an ancient Motorola and mine is a recent LG. There are excellent set up instructions should you need them from the Eton website. Its actually very simple to set up. Lights, Sirens, Radio, Crank and Auto settings are clearly marked. Dialing is no problem, and the TV and Weather Service reception is excellent. This product has it all, and is a must for having a dependable weather warning or disaster communication radio.

This works fine - got it in the time promised. The only difficulty is that there is not much of an instruction manual.
