My main reason to buy the G7 is to get an improved quality of the pictures over the ones from a Canon G2.
The G7 is nice small, but misses the ergonomic hold on one side. The fixed display on the back is clear and large, and a great aid to view the pictures and the cameras settings. The rechargeable battery has to be recharged outside the camera. The switches on the camera are accessible, and well indicated. No separate lens cover is necessary, as it has an auto cover (one thing less you can loose)
When everything is on auto it is easy to make technical good pics. But changing the settings is not so intuitively. You have to read the manual, and then t is not too difficult. Making multiple shots goes well. Storing the data goes rapidly enough,
I did some comparison of the pictures made by the G2 and G7 of the same object. The pictures of the G7 are sharper and have more definition in both shape and color. So it is the better camera. But is this the difference one can expect after 5 years of progress? Actually I expected a bit more, so I have mixed feelings. The step forward going from 4 to 10 MPixel is visible.
All in all, the G7 is a good camera, but not "standards" setting.
