The Real Story     On: 2008-07-06

I have had the 2 mile radios that worked well for 1/2 mile+
These 25 mile radios work for several miles without much issue except for heavy obstructions (trees, buildings, and the worst is the earth)

The batteries last for a lot longer than I expected (12 hour drive in a caravan to communicate between vehicles on a single charge) and they are easy to operate.

I would not recommend these for construction type applications as the button is tough to operate with gloves and the clip wont take much abuse.
They are perfect for car to car communication, around the home, and great on boats!
I use them to speak to my friends when we are fishing so that I dont have to alert the entire world to the fishing hot spots on the VHF radio.
These are not commercial grade radios, but I dont regret the purchase and when necessary, I will replace these with the latest and greatest Cobra two way radios.
Hope this was helpful!

Works Great In The Park     On: 2008-04-17

I operate a kickball league and issue these to all my game officials and we are relatively far at each end of our area and they always work to our expectations.
Mediocre quality control.     On: 2008-03-09

I first bought 2 pairs of Cobra LI 7000-2 WX VP 25-Mile GMRS/FRS 2-Way Radios. A pair turned out to be useless, since one of the radios batteries would not charge at all.

So I asked for a replacement but the new pair of radios had the exact same problem: one of the radios would not turn on because of the defect in the battery.

As you can guess this time I didnt ask for a replacement, but a refund instead.

I have had these 2 way radios for less than a year and I am already having poor reception and batteries will not fully charge.

In open land they work very well, loud and clear. From car to car in traffic the distance is limited to about five miles.

I have owned several of the "high power" radios from Cobra, Motorola, and Midland. Range has become a big problem in these discussions. Be advised that manufacturers claims for distance are irrelevant and their claims for "5 watts" output are misleading. According to the FCC, the actual rated power output on these units at the antenna is about 1.25 watts. Thats actually pretty good for consumer GMRS radios. Of the new models, I think only the Midlands put out slightly more at 1.6 watts. Midland GXT800VP4 22-Channel 26-Mile GMRS 2-Way Radio (Pair)

These radios get high marks for their compact size. However, the lithium batteries heat-up noticeably under heavy transmission. For occasional use (which would be more typical), they should be fine. I have avoided the DCS privacy codes, so delayed transmission has not been a problem. They seem to work fine with just CTCSS codes. The DCS problem could be a design flaw. Sound quality is surprisingly good given the tiny speakers. Also, sometimes I had trouble indexing my finger correctly over the small transmit button that can get lost under the much larger rubber cover on the side of the radio, causing me to think I was transmitting when I really wasnt. This could be a problem when operating with cold hands or gloves.

Due in part to the short antenna, plan on maybe 4 miles range on reasonably flat terrain. Less when hills, trees and/or buildings clutter the line of sight. Maybe 1/2 mile car to car. I cant comment on the durability of the lithium batteries. So far they are working OK.
Excellent radios     On: 2007-11-01

I purchased my first Cobra FRS 3 mile radios around 9 years ago and still work perfectly. The LI 7000 radios are a huge evolution in range, features and specialy battery capacity (1500 mAh) which is the best Ive seen for this radio type.
In regard to the range you can select the power setting acording your needs and be aware that channels 8-14 work only on LOW power setting because they are FRS; for channels 1-7 (FRS/GMRS) and 15-22 (GMRS) you can select HI, MED or LOW.
Not as good as it says     On: 2007-07-26

The range is not all that. The 2-3 second delay is terrible. And how do I put it on a maximum range? I have tried what the manual says and doesnt work.
Very Good for non-professional radios     On: 2007-05-31

Being an Amateur Radio Operator I am very tough to please with radios like this. I am used to radios made for emergency communication that are the same quality as police and fire radios. In addition I have walkie talkies that go through repeaters that can communicate for hundreds of miles. HF radios communicate around the world.

I purchased these for a cruise. The UHF frequencies go through metal better than lower VHF. Having the extra power helps to. Even though they will have a reduced range on things like a ship, they really do pretty well. Having the security codes prevent interference from other people who may be using the same frequency. Overall worth the money.
This radio also has a 1350mah battery that lasts much longer than so many other cheap walkie talkies. This is probably the best one made.
25 mi range? on what planet...?     On: 2007-05-14

I bought these with the knowledge that manufacturers inflate their claims of quality regardless of the product. So, Im thinking, if they claim a 25 mile range, certainly thats under optimal conditions. With this in mind, I was sure these would work for me at a range of at least 15% of their claim. Thats about 3 3/4 miles. Surely if they claim a range of 25, I can get 3 3/4, right? WRONG!I live in a small town with small short buildings, no sky scrapers etc. Very few obstructions in fact. My line-of-sight range is less than 3 city blocks. Save your money folks. Buy flowers for your girlfriend gentlemen, or, ladies spend the money on a manicure. Just dont waste it on these 2 way radios.
Good radios except for a glitch     On: 2007-05-12

I purchased these radios a couple of weeks ago. Today I went to see what reviews had been posted. The only one says that he found a 2-3 second delay in transmitting, something quite annoying. Curiously, one of mine has the same problem, only one of them. After doing some experimenting, I found that this problem occurs only while using the DCS privacy channel encoding. Using CTCSS does not create this problem. Other than that, I am very happy with the radios. They feature maximum 5-watt output, the maximum legal. I have been updating my two way radios since the first two-mile (0.5 watt)came out, always being somewhat disappointed with the range results. These do have a noticeable improved range over the Cobra 17-mile I had before (with which I was happy enough until one of them was dropped in a lake, never to be found).

A few weeks after writing the above, 1 of the Li Ion batteries gave up. It would just simply not charge at all. I called Cobra customer service and they told me to return them for warranty repair. I still have not received them back. I will let you know how it goes. I did include a letter mentioning the 2-3 second delay, as well as the fact that the battery charger never turns off even after the batteries are fully charged, as opposed to a previous model I had. I called this by its name: a major design step back. OK I have received them back in good working order. The 2-second delay glitch is still there, and the service people did not bother to make any comment on my letter. Overall,Im quite happy with the radios and would opt for them in the future again.
Transmittion Problems     On: 2007-04-27

Shortly after purchasing both radios developed a 2-3 delay between pushing the transmit button and the radio actually transmitting. Obviously anything said during that time period is lost. Could live with that except when utilizing the VOX capability. Pretty hard to remember to talk for 2-3 seconds before saying anything meaningful. Returned radios in exchange for new ones, will see if these are any better. Cobra was of NO help, dropping my calls twice while waiting for technical assistance.
