I like Vonage and I like D-Link, but somehow together they dropped the ball on this one. See the above review on the routers problem with keeping its security settings. I have the same problem. Every time it loses power you have to manually reset your security settings and passowrd. And you have to try fiveor six times before it will "take". I called Vonage, their great suggestion was I should buy a new router. They offered to send me a new non-wireless VOIP device..they wont support this router. D-Link? They refer you to Vonage..they dont even HAVE a firmware update which might fix the problem. My advice, stay away from this dog. On: 2008-07-19
Just to be clear, Im reviewing the VWR-VD, not the VR. I have a home setup with a Mac G4 and a MacBook.
Ive had my Vonage router just a couple of days but everything seems to be working well so far. The setup according to the instructions was easy, done within minutes. The router began transmitting a strong wireless signal immediately, but the phone signal wasnt coming through. I went onto the Vonage site to register the new router and that did the trick.
Basically, I bought this wireless router so, on scorching summer days, I could work in my bedroom which is the only one with a/c. My apartment is not huge (~ 750 sq ft) and I get a strong signal throughout. In fact, my Internet connection is faster now than with my old non-wireless Motorola Vonage router.
VR-model owners were justifiably angry that the router didnt save WAP security settings in the event of power loss. The VD does. After reading about this issue, I unplugged the router several times (45 minutes at the longest) and each time the security settings were preserved. I read somewhere that the trick was NOT to change your default login username/password. Its silly, I admit, but at least it works. Since this is a Vonage router, Im assuming that it will be part of a home setup, not a public one, so keeping the manufacturers default login settings is probably OK.
Users in other Vonage forums complained that it was impossible to establish FTP connections wirelessly, but that has not been an issue with the VWR-VD. I have also been able to wirelessly access my G4 from my MacBook.
This model has really been doing everything I wanted it to. Also, it saves me the trouble, energy and cost of running a regular wireless router in conjunction with a VoIP adapter. My workstation has too much cord-clutter as it is!
Basically, the serious flaws that came with the VWR-VR dont seem present with the VWR-VD. Lets hope it continues this way! On: 2008-02-22
My issue is that this router loses its security settings every time its rebooted. This happens a lot in my area because we have power outages a lot, so it powers back up, doesnt reload the security settings, and thus leaves a security hole in my home network. Kind of a bad design in my opinion. Doing a manual reset to the correct security settings is certainly possible, but seems to be finicky (it requires a login to a web-based utility) and usually takes me a few tries to get it working correctly. Drives my wife and I crazy.
Instead of an integrated wireless/VoIP solution, Ill spend about the same money and get a better standalone wireless router and a better standalone VoIP adapter. This one isnt worth your money. On: 2008-02-19
Im a UK vonage customer & have just received this d-link VWR as an upgrade since i was having troubles with my old linksys router.
This d-link fixed the problems I had with the linksys but introduced tonnes more!
Major set-backs ive found so far:
1)Awful web admin interface. Get anything wrong & no error messages are displayed and all the details entered disappear! Is only compatible with IE.
2)Wireless A/P setup is temperamental. Ive set up the WPA encryption, saved and everythings fine until a power cut, or its unplugged... all the settings in the router get cleared leaving the access point open to all with no security!! Very bad!
3) The device doesnt allow wireless clients access to wired lan clients for some reason. Somehow they cant see each other in the workgroup or even ping each other using their assigned Ips! So unless all your PCs are wireless or all hard-wired in there no chance of file sharing here!
My advise... steer clear of this one! Get a decent router, and buy the simple vonage telephone adapter (d-link VTA) instead. On: 2007-07-23
Works great. No hang ups ... great voice quality. Super wireless coverage though I did end up swappin in a cheap 9db antenna to make it better. Pure plug and Play ... worked first time ... every time. All my peripherals are networked and they all communicate with the ethernet ports and the wireless connections. Highly recommend it if you can still find one! On: 2007-07-03
The product works fine except for one thing. I cannot connect my OKI laser printer to it and have it network wirelessly with my other computers (not compatible). Luckily, I have two adapters and the other Linksys wireless adapter does work with it. On: 2007-01-19
I bought this router because my old Linksys Vonage Wireless Router caused a delay when receiving calls. I connected this up and everything was fixed! Actually, this has caused more problems.
Now when I visit websites I get random "Server Not Found" errors. Its not my web browser, cable model, email or configuration. It also happens on my other PC.
It also randomly would occur in Thunderbird, in my FTP program and my Postage software. I switched out the router and everything works fine again.
My opinion is that all the Vonage Wireless Routers are garbage. Im done with Vonage. They were great a year ago and have now ent way downhill. Ill pay an extra $20 month to not deal with so so many problems. On: 2007-01-07
Im sorry to say that Ive purchased and used this device. If I could have went below one star I would have done so. Basically this router doesnt do all that it is touted to handle. It hangs quite regularly (bad in any event). It fails to display accurate status lights when services are disabled. It provides inadequate WIFI support since all of the security functions dont work. The DHCP server doesnt always function correctly. And even the VoIP functions weirdly at times. So all in all, I would not recommend this router to anyone, even an enemy. Id feel bad for making anyone suffer with the poor service it provides.
