I purchased this exact model in August 2007 from Amazon. Now, in April 2008 there is plenty of screen burn such as the CNBC logo and the HIstory Channel logo. I called Hitachi to check the warranty and screen burn is not covered under warranty. Hitachi just said sorry, you have to live with it or buy another one. I will NEVER buy a Hitachi again. Another huge complaint is the remote. The button layout sucks and the remote has to be pointed exactly at the remote sensor on the tv or it doesnt work even with fresh batteries. Also, when you change the channels there is a huge delay (a black screen)before the next channel appears. If your a channel surfer you will be in a nightmare. DO NOT BUY THIS PLASMA TV ! I Love this TV!!
OK,it is not a true 1080, but it was also a grand less any 1080 TVs and priced below the 720 close out deals. Sears put it on sale for $1,299.99 and with a four year warrenty it came to $1,600.00. The picture quality is excellent, it just took a while to figure out how to turn it on.
the Audio could be better, but go through a reciver and you will be happy. On: 2007-12-28
We love the Plasma TV. First one we have owned. I know it is not a true 1080, but a savings of 600-800 dollars is very convincing. The picture quality is excellent. On: 2007-12-27
We bought this TV right before Thanksgiving for $998 at BestBuy and love it. This is first HDTV for us and we are very pleased so far. True, its not 1080p but the picture quality is superb for 1080i and Im not sure Id know the difference anyways.
It was easy to set up and we were watching it in no time flat. Very nice, good size HDTV for the price. On: 2007-12-11
Bought this from Best Buy for $996 (but I opted to get the $200 4-year warranty) so it was truly a steal.
I have basic analog cable TV, and it still looks great. So many settings you can play with, sharpness, black point, etc.
I got an upconversion DVD player for $30 (Magnavox, 1080i upconvert) from WalMart and I popped in Live Free or Die Hard, and it looked totally HD- it was great.
Your friends eyes will glaze over at how big it is.
Only problem I have is that you cant do picture-in-picture with it..thats the only negative star! On: 2007-11-29
I set this up myself. The only problem I had was turning on Power. When I first turned it on there was no power, I finally opened the manual and it told me about a power button on underneath the right front. Once I turned on power everything else was easy. 1080i is best choice for the money. My Satellite HD is 1080i, my HD DVD player (toshiba) is 1080i. I dont see the need for buying a 1080p TV because the only thing that is available is the HD DVD in 1080p. I love HD on this TV. Plasma is also a better choice for me because I need wider angle of view for the smaller room I have. I can see reflection of lamps and windows on the TV screen, but it is minor problem. I use a Denon amp with 7.1 surround sound and it works very well with HD movies. The sound from the TV is ok, but not as good as through an amp. On: 2007-11-28
Unreal tv. Best $996.99 I ever spent. I have a 32" LCD and regular (non HD) channels dont look to great. On this TV though , non HD channels look amazing! I watched Surfs up and Transformers last night and I would rather watch this than go to the theater. I have a 1200 watt home theater system hooked up to it with 1080 upconvert dvd and I am more than satisfied. Watch Best Buys website for this to go on sale from time to time for under $1000. You will thank all us reviewers later. On: 2007-11-28
Im an owner of a Hitachi TV that I purchased last year (though not this model). Its on its second trip to the repair shop. This time its been in there for 7 weeks. I keep getting the runaround from the repair center Hitachi had take the TV and Hitachi says their isnt much they can do for me except wait for it to be repaired. If you value your TV-watching experience, stay away from Hitachi. If you ever have problems with your set and need it repaired, plan to wait for months. Id give this zero stars if Amazon would let you. On: 2007-11-23
Just Bought this tv. Couldnt be happier with the picture quality. People complain that its not a 1080p, however the cable and satellite providers are still ten years from tranmitting this. So a 1080i is the best picture you are going to get anyways.maybe ill buy a 1080p when the tecnology is being used other than a hd dvd player or blu ray. On: 2007-11-23
I saw this TV on display along side a $4000.00 Pioneer. The Pioneer was better but not $3000.00 better. Prices are coming down on this model. I purchased mine for $875.00, and have seen it advertised at other B&M stores for around a grand. An excellent value. On: 2007-11-22

Purchased this TV a month ago thru best buys website for $1,499.00 before they increased the price to $1,799.00 - should have waited and purchased thru amazon and saved some on the taxes best buy tacked on! Dont despair Amazon - I did buy the Onkyo HT-SR800 home theater system thru you :-) .
Cant complain folks...watching Dave Matthews Live on the HD-Music channel brought tears to my eyes (what can I say, it was AWESOME - and music, well, has an effect on me). May not be 1080p, and it may not be full HD, but who cares? The picture quality is great...at less than $1,500, it is a no-brainer. On: 2007-11-16

For the money I could not have purchaced a better TV. This is awesome. Vivid colors, black blacks. Viewing angles much greater than the 42" Sony LCD that we moved up from. On: 2007-10-15
Just had this delivered two days ago and am totally pleased with the picture and I dont even have the HD
receiver hooked up yet. If you didnt want or expect to get HD, still get this set as the standard def picture is
tremendous. I am not a technophobe nor audiophile so I found it a bit puzzling to get access from dvd, ps2 or
why the picture wouldnt come back on, but a little fumbling and I did finally catch on. Totally my fault. The
sound is good for me, Im not looking to be launched towards the back wall with monster sound. I saved more than $1,000 from my next choice, so theres still Christmas in this house! On: 2007-07-06
If you read the technical specifications, it clearly states that this television is 1080i, not 1080P. This is why we research before we buy. On: 2007-06-28
My Hitachi HDTV is still broken after 4 repair attempts. Phone support flat out lies to me telling me they dont offer refund or exchange. After escalating it to her supervisor, got him to admit that exchange is an option. Now waiting for them to call me back with their decision. Not holding my breath. On: 2007-04-17
This TV looks so much better than the 720p 50" plasmas for me, it was a no brainer. Most true 1080p plasmas start about $1000 more than this TV, LCDs at 50" cost 5X as much. I really cant tell a difference between this Hitachi and the true 1080p plasmas, if you can, your eyes are better than mine. You can save $400 to $500 by getting a 720p 50" plasma, but you will sacrifice some in resolution. Go compare them side by side, just make sure the inputs at the store are 1080p resolution to show the difference. I am VERY HAPPY with this TV. I bought it for $2000 4/5/07, look around and you can find this price. On: 2007-03-13
Bought it at Circuit City and configured my Onkyo SRX-604 (connected to Bose) along with the logitech eHarmoney remote.
Buy it - excellent picture.good price...enjoying it. one more thing..the good thing is pixels move every 2 mins(dont notice) to preserve the screen.
Saw it along with the HD DVD player and Onkyo SRX604 receiver(I own) - The picture quality is awesome.
Keep in mind that the name - Hitachi P50H401 50" 1080p Plasma HDTV - is misleading. a true 1080p is 1920 x 1080 and not Resolution: 1280 (H) x 1080 (V) which is the case in this hitachi.
check the hitachi site out, even they are not saying that this is a 1080p.
giving 5 star as DVD movies look great - just finished seeing Casino Royale and Superman returns.
Amazon, please do not mislead!!! I am sure this is not intentional as others are misleading too. At least Circuit City is fair enough (no I dont work for CC nor do I have a relative working out there) On: 2007-03-12
