Very Disappointed in this DVD Player     On: 2008-06-09

Weve had this dvd player for 6 months. The picture quality isnt great. The worst part of the player is that it only gives you about 3 seconds of notice before the battery dies. Also, you can not charge the battery at the same time you are watching it. I would not recommend this dvd player.
A Good BUy     On: 2008-06-05

This was good value. it works great for our kids in the car or if they want to watch a movie in their room. Head phones work good. Overall a very good buy
nice, inexpensive, works great     On: 2008-05-30

Its inexpensive, it works right out of the box, and the quality of the picture and sound seem just fine. The toddler loves it, the husband loves it, and it does entertain. It is a bit of a pain to get around some headrests (so you might want to get a bulldog clip or something to get it to hang right) but it is well worth the price.
this is so m uch better with most usefull stuff than the coby i bought in the past     On: 2008-05-18

good product,YOU can carry it whereever you want, nice picture, do i have to say anything more important than this..oh yes...GOOD PRICE!
great dvd at a great price     On: 2008-05-11

i have no complaints about this product- it is fairly new but it works great. and the price is great for all that it comes with.
Dead battery at 6 months     On: 2008-04-28

After about 6 months of light use, the battery is dead and will not charge. Warranty is only 90 days, and I have not been able to find where to purchase another battery. I would advise staying away and purchasing another DVD player.
Great player for kids     On: 2008-04-14

I got this dvd player for our 22 month old. it made our flight and car rides much smoother and i didnt feel bad about letting him carry it around since the price was so reasonable. if youre getting this for yourself id upgrade to a better model just for picture quality and sound but for kids this is great.
excellent device at a fair price!     On: 2008-04-07

I was looking for a good personal dvd player with lots of extras at a low price and this one surpassed my expectations. The sound is excellent, crystal clear, with and without headphones, the carrying case makes portability a joy, the headphones are great for when others are asleep or enjoying another movie. Car power cord makes the need for batteries obsolete but when we want to take it with along to a restaurant or doctors office the included power pack keeps the kids entertained for a veeery long time. I liked this unit so much that I purchased 2 more. With all the features this baby has to offer you would think that youd have to spend way more than the asking price. WHAT A DEAL!!! Audiovox D1817PK 8" Portable DVD Player Package System
Awsome     On: 2008-04-07

We love the DVD player. Our last DVD player was a Panasonic and it worked ok but my grandchildren would kick the case because it was so bulky and knock the DVD player out of the case. This case is awsome!(not bulky at all) The DVD player is awsome it is very easy to operated even when I am driving. I would highly recommend this system to anyone. We LOVE it!!!!!
Pleased with purchase.     On: 2008-03-28

I purchased this portable DVD play to take on a trip by train from CT to FL. The unit worked very well and it was a real plus having two sets of headphones. My two daughters, 17 and 15 used it most of the time and were very happy with the picture and sound quality. My only complaint would be that the battery life is so short (2 1/2 hours or so) and if we didnt have access to electrical outlets on the train to recharge, it would not have met our needs at all. I did know about the battery life when I bought the unit so its not like it came as a big surprise. It will be great on trips by car where we can charge it as needed. All in all, so far I am happy with this purchase and I think for the price its a good value.
great gift idea!     On: 2008-03-28

bought this product as a gift for my nephew. He is really enjoying it! Great price for an 8" screen.
Great value for portable video     On: 2008-03-20

Have had this item since Christmas 07. Purchased it for my daughter and for traveling video for the family on trips. Was not expecting to get top of the line video and sound, but the quality was better than what I expected for under $100. System is easy to use and has everything I needed without having to go out and buy the included accessories. Quality matches similar products costing the same price without all of the extras.

Picture and sound is more than adequate for watching movies on a 8" screen, and my experience shows that it will last as long as one costing twice as much.
"Lifesaver"     On: 2008-03-17

We purchased this for our active 1 1/2 yr old so he could watch "Blues Clues" on an airplane trip. We werent looking forward to trying to keep him still for 2 hrs on the plane without something. This worked great! It was small and light-weight enough that our 6 yr old carried it as his carry-on piece. It even made the wait in the airport painless...thanks.
Piece of garbage     On: 2008-02-21

I purchased this DVD player in late September and for the first four months it worked fine; then suddenly it just stopped working. After a couple of unanswered emails to "customer service" at Audiovox, I was finally advised that they would try to repair the player for a fee of $79.95!!! Thats right, $80 to repair a $115 item!!
Im going to save my $80 bucks and put it toward a new DVD player, from a reputable manufacturer. As a result of this experience, I will NEVER buy another Audiovox product and I will make a point of telling everyone I know about my terrible experience with them.
Excellent for the price catagory     On: 2008-02-14

Many have given it lower star ratings, but for the price the Audiovox D1817 is excellent. If one is looking for home theater resolution, buy a home theater , but if one is looking for DVD (& CD) on the go, this will do it. The sound is level and quality is adequate to the job with its headphones. The ergonomics is good, with all normally used options on the set (extras found on the credit card remote). It is sturdy for what it is, much better than its competitors. I recommend it for no nonsense, on-the-go use, or even off in the corner quiet time. However, it does not have the resolution to adequately display jpgs, so use a computer.
Pay more and get something that works     On: 2008-02-10

I thought that this could be a good cost benefit dvd, however it does not work. When I press skip chpater it locks and takes 30s to complete the operation. The built in batery limits the life, since you can not buy a new one to replace the old one.

I recommend spend US$ 50 or US$ 70 more and buy something better.
Carey     On: 2008-02-08

Just the best. It was exactly what I was looking for. The picture and sound are the highest quality.
headman     On: 2008-01-19

The product was more than described. My son was extremely pleased. It is a great source of discipline, when he is bad we threaten to take it away.

great portible DVD     On: 2008-01-18

Compact durable great DVD player.
After turning off starts DVD from the beginnig, minimal unconviniance, othervise no problems.
Dvd Player     On: 2008-01-18

I bought this for my daughter and she loves it, Everything works good on it. You might want to get the ear phones with it the volume is a little low. This has a good picture. This was a great deal for the money.
nice little package     On: 2008-01-14

This is a great deal. You get the dvd player, 2 headsets, car adapter, a remote and a carrying case. Very good quality from Audiovox. I use this in bed when hubby is asleep and I dont want to wake him but I am not tired yet. It was a little noisy when starting a dvd but then is quiet.
Best Buy     On: 2008-01-12

Although my purchase was a gift to my daughters little ones, she expressed deep appreciation because it works so well and keeps the kids very satisfied while driving long distances. It was worth every penny spent.
Buy something else     On: 2008-01-10

I tried to mount this in my daughters Lexus and it simply wouldnt mount so that the screen was visible to my grandchild riding in the rear seat. Also, when it was mounted, no one was able to sit comfortably in the front seat due to the lower strap. Spend a little more and get a better car mount.

Perfect for traveling with kids     On: 2008-01-04

We bought this for our 4 and 6 year old sons for use during the holiday travels and couldnt be happier with it. They used it in the airport (plugged in), on the plane both ways (battery didnt run out for the 3+ hour flights) using the two headsets, in the car (4+ hour trip) using the speaker, and at our relatives house hooked up to the TV that didnt have a DVD player. It really made the traveling more enjoyable for them - and us!
Piece of junk!     On: 2008-01-03

This portable DVD player lasted 1 day before ceasing to work. The screen went blank and wouldnt work. I would NOT recommend this product whatsoever!!!!!
Works great but....     On: 2008-01-02

Very please w/ Audiovox DVD player. Head rest mounting straps to short for wide head rests, need to be longer.
battery issues     On: 2007-12-22

At first Audiovox had incorrect information as to spare battery for unit. After shipping me 2 wrong ones, ( I was allowed to return)it was determined the correct ones were due in from overseas the following month. I was traveling and wanted for trip, did not work out. I bought generic battery at local electronics store, just a lot heavier and awkward to travel with.
Great for Traveling with Kids!     On: 2007-12-19

I purchased this DVD player for a plane trip with my 10 month old son (to play Baby Einstein & keep the peace on our first flight). The player worked wonderfully, I had no problems charging the battery or playing any of the DVDs I brought along. The player lasted the entire flight (which was appx 4 hours) without any issues. I loved the fact that everything fit into the included carry case and Im excited to use the car kit in a few months and see how it works out. It is an excellent player--especially with all the extra items included--for the price. The sound quality was fine; I was a little worried about the sound after reading some of the reviews, but personally found no problems with it whatsoever. I would definitely recommend this product to a friend. I look forward to using this for a long time to come!
Picture is great...sound poor only without the headsets     On: 2007-12-18

This was our first portable DVD player. My son liked it a lot, but the headsets made his ears sweat. He preferred to listen to the videos without the headsets and even with the sound turned all the way up, it was still difficult to hear over the typical road noise. The only other thing negative I can think about saying about this product is the difficulty changing the discs. the strap that kept the player in place against the backseat of our car made it difficult to change the discs without juggling the whole machine. I dont know if that is typical of all portable DVD players, but I found it difficult to handle with this model. Other than those two negatives, I thought it was a good quality player. The major plus for this is the size of the whole unit. It is even smaller than my regular purse! That alone made this player a great purchase for our family.
Great portable DVD Player     On: 2007-12-17

This DVD player was a life-saver for our plane ride across the country. Our little one at least was occupied for a few hours watching her movie. The headphones were a little big for her head, (so we just played it w/out the headphones and it was fine - even on the plane), but they were comfortable for me. I havent had a chance to use it in the car so I cant tell you anything about how that goes but it is mountable to a backseat I believe. Ive hooked it up regular tv and it works awesome too.
On 2nd thought--     On: 2007-12-01

I received this as a birthday gift some time ago, tried it once, stored it, and have just remembered where I put it. The item is completely unnecessary, redundant, overkill. Get a 13" small laptop with rechargeable battery for a few hundred more if you want a machine that does everything and more handily than this, not to mention puts the world at your finger tips. And who needs another remote switch to learn--especially one with many, many, never-to-be-used "features" crunched into a small space? Moreover, the screen is so tiny Ive got to have it within a foot or two from my face to watch anything like a feature-length movie (thank goodness for that handy remote! Cant stand the thought of having to move my head an inch). A tiny screen makes sense only if you like the novelty of carrying it with you in your shirt pocket or giving it to little kids, who love holding my iPod while watching cartoons (the only use Ive found for it, and then only for the grandkids).

The problem now is, have you ever tried selling a used DVD player? (I know I wouldnt buy one regardless of shape or make.) This is going to the Salvation Army. Maybe someone more grateful than I will derive some satisfaction from it.
Perfect package for younger viewers     On: 2007-11-26

If youre searching for a portable DVD player for your own use (or another person over the age of, say, 6), this is not the player youre looking for. Instead, take a look at the Philips PET1030 10.2" Portable DVD Player with Car Mount Kit and comparable units. For the rest of us--those who need a reliable player for trips with the younger kids--this is a solid purchase.

I demand the very best audio and video quality that I can afford. My three year old, on the other hand, could care less whether a display is 1080p or 108p. As long as her DVDs are edu-taining her, shes happy.

The picture on this unit wont impress you. My test viewing of Pirates of the Caribbean was laughable--no matter how I tweaked the video settings (brightness/contrast/sharpness/hue), I couldnt trick a decent picture from the low-res display. However, the type of programming a pre-6 year old watches, such as animated shows and Sesame Street programs, looks quite good.

The package includes everything you need for the road. On our first road trip--a ten-hour roundtrip weekend getaway--we needed every included accessory and nothing more. In the car, the soft carrying case easily attached to the headrest, providing a nice viewing area at eye-level with my child. The car adapter has a lengthy cord that can reach an outlet in the front console. The inclusion of two sets of headphones came in handy--Mom and daughter watched a DVD together while I enjoyed NPRs Sunday line-up. The remote control is another great feature--instead of reaching back to forward to the next chapter, I used the remote from the front seat to find the section my daughter wanted to watch.

All in all, its a no fuss, full-featured portable DVD package perfectly suited for the younger set. And lets face it--any electronic gadget in the vicinity of a child is in constant danger from a spill from a juicebox or a fall from tiny hands. Best if the loss of your investment doesnt make you cry, too.

Works great!     On: 2007-11-21

We recently purchased this because we tend to travel often. Our toddler does much better if we play videos for him on the car trip. So far, this has been a great buy. We have found one DVD that it will not play - it gets hung up in a certain spot (and it plays on our regular DVD player) Even so, we love this. When traveling in the car, you can hear the DVD speakers just fine. And there is a brightness control that allows you to make the screen brighter/darker depending on circumstances. We have not yet used the battery, we just plug in the car adapter.

The reason we rated this four stars instead of five is because of the car carrying case. The first time we tried to put the player in it, the elastic strap that supports it, came unattached. So, it wouldnt hold the DVD player. We contacted amazon and they were great about helping us out.

Also, the car carrying case, as far as we can tell, isnt one that can go in between the two seats - it has to go on the back of the seat. For our cars, the strap wasnt big enough to fit around the whole headrest. So it was only supported by one of the metal bars on the headrest and therefore the bottom straps (that connect to the bottom of the seat) we didnt use.

But other than that, its a lightweight, great little unit. We dont regret buying it. It was the cheapest, highest rated, DVD player we could find.

Not very impressed.     On: 2007-11-12

I havent had this machine very long, but have to say that so far I am not too impressed.
I charged up the battery per the instructions and got a video to check it out. if it hadnt had words on the opening screen I might not have noticed how bad the pixilation is, enough I would guess, to make reading the credits impossible. Neither the color nor sharpness are anywhere near as good as on the phillips (which actually costs a bit less), nor is the build quality.

This machine is unusual, in that it has a detachable battery. This *could* be an advantage as it would allow you to carry a spare and double the battery life...BUT it is just about impossible to find the spare/ replacement battery; even audiovoxs site doesnt list them (among the dozens they list for other models). Its also worth noting that the way it hangs off the back is kind of clunky and means the machine will need to be treated with more care than many.

I bought this because it had such good (4.5 stars) reviews, but noticed that many are from people who bought this for a toddler or other young child, and may not even have watched it themselves. I bought this for myself, for travel, and am much less impressed.

Last year my son got a coby 10" tablet for the about the same price (actually, $20 less). It is sturdy, compact and has better picture, better build.

I was looking for something smaller (than his 10")...but this isnt- (only the screen). I may be returning this, as for just a few dollars more you can get a better picture & more features, and EVERY other portable dvd player Ive seen is more compact. An 8" player should not weigh as much, and take up as much space as a 10".

Id recommend the coby, phillips and toshiba players over this one (for good bets in this price range).

We use it all the time     On: 2007-11-09

Ive used this little portable DVD player over and over at home and in the car. My 2 year old son watches movies on it all the time. We dropped it on the sidewalk a couple weeks ago and it still works like new. The quality is great and I love that it comes with the car pack.
perfect for our trip     On: 2007-10-29

I purchased this unit to keep my 3-1/2 year old grand daughter busy during the 18 hour drive on our vacation. The unit worked flawless. Battery life was enough for 2 movies. Having everything included was a plus.
Good player-wish the battery fit while in case     On: 2007-10-22

the products works well. I just wish the case would allow room for the battery to stay attached while it is in the case. On the plane, you need to pull it completely out of the case to attach the battery. Otherwise, it works very well. Good sound and picture.
Works great.. perfect for our travel needs..     On: 2007-10-17

Weve used this on a couple plane trips for our two year old and it works great. The screen is just the right size and the picture quality is good.

The sound from the speakers isnt the greatest, but it is audible when you are fighting against the jet noise. We havent tried it on a car trip, but I expect things to go well.
Served Our Purposes Well     On: 2007-09-21

We got this for our 2 year old when we had to make weekly 6 hour car trips. It served the purpose well, we didnt hear all the crying and whining and moaning that we normally did. She got crackers all over it, and it wiped clean. The picture and sound are not stellar, but it is good enough for a small portable DVD player.
Good Product     On: 2007-09-12

I received the portable dvd player in just a few days. The picture and sound are great. It is easy to use. I really like it! I consider it a good buy.
Very Pleased     On: 2007-09-06

After searching at differant Websites I found that Amozon offered the best products and best prices. Delivery time was excellent. The DVD player that we purchase is operating good and my son is really enjoying it.
Nice Machine     On: 2007-08-31

I am very happy with this DVD player. I bought it for my tread mill and it works fine. The sound is not good without the headphones and you have to play around a little with the screen to get the right viewing angle. It is very easy to load and doesnt require a Masters in Engineering to set up. All in all for the price I dont see how you can go wrong.
Good player for price     On: 2007-08-03

Bought this for my 3 yr old for summer vacation plane trip. Worked well, played DVDs and audio CDs with no issues.
Headphones included with system are a little large for small children, but fit an adults head just fine.
Picture quality was good, audio quality was also good.
All-in-all a good product for the price.
Great product     On: 2007-07-17

This player is easy to use. I have not had any problems and thus far and extremely satisfied with it. I would recommend it.
