We have 7 of the JVC DR-MV78 dvd/vcr combos in use in a department in our hospital. They get used about 5 times/week each. In 6 months 4 have failed. I have had this problem with all JVC products that I have purchased from car stereo (2 failed within 1 year), home stereo (2 failed within 1st year after turning audio volume up to 2/3). Never buy JVC again!!!!!!! On: 2008-06-22
After two months this unit would not accept any discs, even discs it had burned itself or store bought DVDs. JVC would not cover it because it was out of the one month warranty. I threw this thing away and will never buy a JVC product again. On: 2008-05-06
My story is identical to others here. I bought my unit in January 2008 and I soon had problems with the DVD door not wanting to open. Then just after the 90 day warranty on labor expired in April, the DVD player stopped playing DVDs. At first, I thought it was a problem with the DVDs, but it turns out to be the machine. I just bought this piece of crap and now I have to buy another one. I guarantee you I will never buy anything made by JVC for the rest of my life. I strongly advise others to heed my warning. I usually ignore rants like this, but as you can see, Im not alone. On: 2008-04-30
I bought this piece of junk for $189 in Nov., 07 and in Feb right before the 90 days warranty is up it failed to recognize any DVD. I had it repaired at a JVC authorized center and one week after it was back to the same problem. Took it back and got it repaired and about the second week in March another problem crops up-it displayed Hello(Im dead) and would not open up the CD tray. I took it back to the repair shop and got it repaired. Brought it home last week Friday , April 25, 08 excited to look at a movie and it played for no more than 10 minutes and the Hello (Im dead again) shows up with my rented movie stuck in it. What to do!!! I called up JVC requested a refund but was told it cant be done. They gave me a warranty extension till July, 08. I cannot find the time to take it back to the shop.
I will never buy anything with a JVC label. On: 2008-04-26
I PURCHASE THIS ITEM JVC DRMV78B FROM ANOTHER SOURCE IN JAN.2008 IT HAS LASTED UNTIL APRIL.2008 I HAVE TO SEND IT BACK FOR A REFUND.90 DAY REPLACEMENT WARANTY HAS RAN OUT. HIGHLY RECCOMEND YOU DO RESEARCH ON THIS MODEL BEFORE PURCHASE. On: 2008-02-19
This machine is great! Easy to use, records everything from pre-recorded VHS to direct satellite broadcasts to TiVo archives (unlike the Sony RDR-VX 555 which I also considered). The difference the up-converting makes in watching regular DVDs is noticeable; dont think its true 1080i, but its definitely a great picture (I have a 50" Pioneer Plasma). On: 2008-01-21
I recommend buyers look at the Amazon reviews for defunct JVC VHS/DVD
dual deck products before they purchase any current dual deck model.
They have a proven history of extremely poor build quality. JVC keeps
rapidly changing model numbers, which makes this more difficult for
the consumer to discover. However they all look very similar with
only slight cosmetic differences.

I was suprised that there is no way to connect directly to the TV cable and I had to buy an RF converter from Radio Shack. I think I should have been warned, especially since I bought this model because I thought I wouldnt need a cable box. I got it to go through setup but still no picture when the VCR/DVR is on.
I finally was able to speak to JVC consumer assistance which told me that I cannot record anything unless its on the TV. I am going to try to return this and buy a more traditional model. On: 2007-08-26

Easy to set up and works great! I originally saw this on QVC, and bought it on Amazon for a much better price. :-)
