Does it not seem strange that the reviews posted here are either ***** or *?
In 16 months, my WD65831 broke down twice. Customer Support routed me through an Indian office. Fine, let em make a buck. But I consider this TV to have been a mistake on my part. Theres nothing special about the picture, and theres really nothing special about the hardware. The thermostat failed at month 11, the lamp at month 16.

I suffer from the rainbow effect. Every other DLP set I look at I can see the rainbows pretty readily. With this one, I have to force myself to see it and it only shows up when looking at white text on a black background when I shake my head from side to side. In otherwords, I never see it under normal viewing conditions.
The colors are awesome, the blacks are deep and the tonal range is incredible. The screen allows a very wide viewing angle and also does well in very brightly light rooms due to the special screen on the 831 series.
The variety of hookups, cablecard, firewire, hdmi, component, etc, etc, coupled with NetCommand really help round out the package.
This is the best DLP out there IMHO, and I shopped around quite a bit.

We are very pleased with the Mitsubishi WD65831 HDTV, the color is just great and we had direcTV HD service installed this morning and all the sporting events such as college football and playoff baseball just come out crystal clear. We couldnt be happier with this TV and would recommend it highly to anyone whos looking for a HDTV. We feel the picture quality and the contrast ratio is just as good as any plasma TV on the market and the cost is definitely much lower.

We did much research on large screen tvs before we purchased this item. When the tv is delivered, you have to do a lot configuration to adjust the tv picture. Once set up correctly, the picture is incredible. The HD channels are beyond belief. Fortunately, we will soon have 70 some HD channels on Direct TV, so that will make are viewing experience even better. We would highly recommend this tv to any one.

I actually won mine in a raffle, and replaced my 12 year old Panasonic 32" tube TV with it. What a mistake. I was expecting a huge improvement in my DVD playback, since I could finally take advantage of the Progressive Scan output of my DVD player. I spent hours playing around with different settings, trying to get an image as sharp and clean as I used to get on my tube TV. But DLP projection technology isnt capable of it. The image is terrible. Lot of grain, noise and ghosting, and way too many motion artifacts. Im glad I didnt pay money for this, but I wish Id simply donated it back to the charity I got it from. So my advice is, dont buy this. And if youre seriously considering it, go find one in a store somewhere and bring in some of your own DVDs to see for yourself.

They call themselves the Wide Screen people, but they are also THE High Definition People! This set is spectacular! Upgraded to this 65" from a WS-55111 55" HD (720i) that Ive had for the past three years. The Net Command set-up is not as customizable as before, but it does it all just fine. The new built-in TV Guide function is like on-board Tivo and works just the same. The Brilliant picture is incredible and the 1080p is the best on the market. Simple plug & play (Simplay HD) of all of my components, and the set can interface with my Pioneer Elite A/V Receiver almost like it was made for it. Digitally connects via HDMI or IEEE to everything, and the set hosts a lot of analog accessabilty, as well. A tad bit pricey, but worth every dollar. Take a look at the stand for this model. Very nice styling and really fuctional.

this tv is awesome, however you MUST have at least 14 feet of viewing distance or you will be blown away by the brightness and crispness of this tv, I only had 11 1/2 feet of viewing distance and the tv was overpowering me after a few hours of viewing, after 4 days I returned it to the store and exchanged it for the exact same tv but the smaller wd57831 version, much better for my living room, in fact look at my review for that tv.

I have had the WD 65831 for 3 weeks now and like it. I think I got it at a fair price through Amazon ($2980 + $200 shipping) and it came during the shipping window they said it would. Please note that they will drop it off just inside your door and nothing further for $200 shipping.
The picture is good for HD and DVD. Regular TV is pretty average. At times Im bothered by "snow" on the screen and Im not sure if its my cable company or the TV. I have a feeling its the cable signal but I will update this concern soon.
I was pleasantly surprised by the viewing angle. By turning up the brightness a bit, you can really see the image well enough from a pretty severe angle. Those times that you have the whole world over to watch a movie or the big game you wont have to stack people directly in front of the screen.
Plenty of inputs in the back and front.
At first the plastic construction seemed a bit flimsy that surrounded the picture but I must admit the lines are clean and the design and manufacturing are pretty well examined by quality control. I manage an engineering company so I did look for things that might indicate poor manufacturing. I must say, they did a good job or I at least got lucky.
Sound is ok. I dont mean that in a bad way. Dont expect Bose sound. But it can get pretty loud and you can adjust treble and bass enough to make it comfortable.
If you are thinking about smaller screens dont do it. Get 63 inches or bigger. Split screen is so much better at this size. Its awesome to have a 36 inch image next to a 27 inch image and be able to see both very well! This is what split screen is all about!!!
I will be trying the other functions soon (SD Card, PC hookup, etc.) and will give an update. Feel free to ask any questions.

I received this HDTV Friday through Electronics Expo- the lamp blew on Monday! It is impossible to contact anyone at Electronics Expo (busy signals, unanswered voice mail). [...] proves no guidance. Mitsubishi warranty dept leads you through a maze of voice mail options, none of which leads to a live person or resolution. At this time I am on indefinte hold trying to get a replacement lamp.
Update - Finally made contact with Mitsubishi, and a replacement lamp at no charge was sent out same day, arrived today 1/10. For such quick response, I would upgrade the rating for Mitsubishi. The TV did look great for the 2 days it worked! Still have not been able to talk to Electronics Expo, and no reply from them on my help request email.

I did several months of research and comparisons before pulling the trigger and spending 4 grand on a TV. But it was well worth it. This Mitsubishi has the best picture and features of everything that I looked at. My only complaint is that after spending that money, my wife felt she had to go out and match me dollar for dollar for the wall entertainment center to put it in.
