Worst service, software, hardware, I have ever experienced     On: 2008-08-11

The Clearplay has clearly been the worst consumer experience I have ever experienced. I have experienced problems with every aspect of their product. These problems include website malfunction, unclear instructions, non-responsive telephone tech support, uneducated tech support both through e-mail and telephone, a corrupt filter stick (how does this happen out of the box?), software that doesnt work and is extremely difficult to use (both PC and Mac solutions are horrible), and DVD player that is both cheap and non-functioning (after two replacements a product should work)! What a fantastic idea but implementation has been nothing but a nightmare. I have spent over 20 hours of my precious time trying to get this product to work. It just hasnt. I would not purchase this product, nor recommend doing any business with their company. I cant even cancel my membership over the phone because their phone system doesnt work properly. I have had to call my credit card company to put a stop payment on their monthly service.

If you enjoy headaches, this is the product for you.
Now my 4-year-old knows who Jack Sparrow is!     On: 2008-06-23

Im grateful to my brother for turning me on to this great bit of technology. While maybe not the greatest DVD player in the world, thats not why you buy it. You buy it so that your family can watch movies without worrying about all that "questionable" stuff you usually find. Plus, you can vary the filter levels from only skipping one or 2 things, up to filtering every little thing. Or play the whole movie without the filters. If you have kids (or old-fashioned grandparents) this is a great idea. Love it.

More Fun For The Family!     On: 2008-02-23

inappropriate language based on closed captioning info. It had served us well. However, we feel that we have "stepped up" to the next level of family friendly movie filtering with our ClearPlay Content-Filtering DVD Player because... not only does it filter inappropriate language, it also filters out inappropriate scenes (visuals) as well. Works great, nice quality picture, component out... We would recommend this product to anyone looking to protect their family from inappropriate material in DVDs while still having the ability to watch many of the Hollywood blockbusters that are available today!
love clearplay     On: 2007-12-28

I have been using mine for 1-2 years not sure. Love it love it. It is so nice to not have to hear it. I do not like bad language. It mutes it during the bad words. YOu know what they are saying but you dont hear it and it is so much better. It also cuts during the inappropriate scenes. I have the old maxplay and a usb one. I like the new usb better. I was going to buy two more today one for my mom but they dont sell them at Target any more. Boo. So I have to look on line.
Really works     On: 2007-12-15

These Clearplay DVD players really do work. You can configure the settings you want and it automatically skips certain scenes and mutes certain words when the ClearPlay feature is turned on. Its done carefully so its as smooth as can be expected. As long as I keep it up to date it supports almost all the movies Ive tried (Ive mostly tried recent PG and PG-13 movies). It makes watching movies together as a family a lot more fun instead of always worrying about "that one part." Of course some movies just arent appropriate for kids with or without filtering, but the majority of movies are mostly good but with just a couple problem areas seemingly inserted just to ensure it wouldnt get the dreaded G rating and be automatically considered a kids movie, even when thats not really the case.
I originally had the older MaxPlay model and replaced it with this one which is a big improvement since you can update it using the standard USB flash drive they provide (the MaxPlay had to use a phone line to dial up and retrieve updates).
Ive contacted support on a couple of occassions and got a quick and helpful email response, so no complaints there.
I havent had any problems with audio or video as long as the unit is plugged in properly and configured correctly. I use the digitial audio and component video outputs so Im not sure about the analog audio out, but Id be really surprised if there was a widespread audio problem as another review seemed to indicate. A hum can be caused by almost anything, from RF interference to a grounding problem in the house wiring, or a just plain cheap junky TV in combination with certain types of equipment.
I have had to "reboot" the unit once or twice by unplugging it for 30 seconds and then plugging back in, but for the most part it works great, and its by far the best option for viewing your existing DVD collection without the scenes and language youd rather not watch/listen to.

Bad audio.     On: 2007-11-27

I purchased one of these from a local seller, and brought it home, hoping to fire it up and enjoy some movies with the kids.

No such luck. There was a horrible problem with the RCA audio out (may be fixed on one of the other digital audio out ports): it has a loud whine which starts as soon as the player powers up and continues even while movies are playing. It also makes noises on the audio out channel when the discs are loading up. I took it back and exchanged it and the second unit had the same problem.

I use my current dvd player to listen to CDs on my stereo, and that was impossible to do with this DVD player, since there was too much noise coming from it to hear the CDs the way Id like.

Other things that were slightly poorly designed: unfinished screws sticking out the bottom of the unit (though there are a few rubber feet which raise the screws above the surface the DVD player is resting on, youd still best not reach your hand under it blindly for fear of getting scraped); flaky power toggle switch that felt like it might break if pressed a few too many times; a not-too-responsive remote (sometimes you have to push a button three times before its recognized by the DVD player, other times the same button works on the first try)...

Theres obviously a lot going on in the software realm in this player, so its entirely possible that many of these problems (saving the physical hardware problems) might be fixed with a future firmware release. If they do get fixed, Id be the first to line up to re-purchase one of these: I think the idea behind the technology is awesome, but the implementation leaves something to be desired.
